CHAPTER 2 – THE BILLIONAIRE WHO NEVER FORGAVE

The rain continued to fall long after Claire lowered the phone.

She stood motionless outside the iron gates, her soaked dress clinging to her skin while Adrian watched from the warmth of the entrance hall.

Then every light inside the mansion flickered again.

Once.

Twice.

And went completely dark.

"What the hell?" Adrian muttered.

The emergency generators should have activated instantly.

They didn't.

Vanessa tightened her grip on his arm.

"Adrian... why are the lights off?"

Before he could answer, the electronic locks echoed through the estate.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every gate.

Every security door.

Every private elevator.

The entire mansion had entered lockdown.

A security guard rushed toward Adrian.

"Sir... the system just overrode our access."

"What do you mean overrode?" Adrian barked.

"I... I don't know. Someone with master authorization just logged in."

Adrian frowned.

"Impossible."

Only one person possessed that level of authority.

Him.

Or so he believed.

Outside, Claire slowly turned away from the mansion.

She wasn't crying anymore.

Not because she wasn't hurt.

Because grief had finally turned into clarity.

A black umbrella appeared above her.

She looked up.

An elderly man in a tailored charcoal coat stood beside her.

"Miss Claire."

She recognized him instantly.

"Mr. Howard?"

For twenty-five years, Howard had served her father.

He had taught her how to ride horses.

He had walked beside her mother's funeral procession.

He had disappeared the day Claire married Adrian.

Not because he wanted to.

Because Richard Lawson had ordered every member of the Lawson family to leave when Claire insisted on giving up her inheritance for love.

Howard's eyes softened.

"Your father asked me to bring you home."

Claire nodded silently.

A long black limousine rolled through the rain.

The driver stepped out and opened the rear door.

Only after Claire sat inside did Howard remove his jacket and gently place it over her shoulders.

"You've lost weight."

She smiled sadly.

"I lost more than weight."

Howard looked toward the mansion one final time.

"No, Miss Claire."

"They lost you."

Inside the mansion...

Adrian was shouting into his phone.

"Get me the bank president!"

Five seconds later...

"The number you have dialed has been disconnected."

He cursed.

Called his chief financial officer.

No answer.

Called his attorney.

Voicemail.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"It's probably just the storm."

Before Adrian could respond...

His assistant called.

She was crying.

"Mr. Collins... we've got a problem."

"What now?"

"Our corporate accounts..."

"What about them?"

"They've all been frozen."

Adrian's heartbeat stopped.

"What?"

"The board just received emergency ownership documents."

"What documents?"

A long silence.

Then...

"Sir..."

"...you've been removed as acting chairman."

Three hundred miles away...

A private Gulfstream jet landed under heavy rain.

The door opened.

Richard Lawson stepped onto the tarmac.

At sixty-five, he still carried himself like the man who had built one of the largest real estate empires in America from nothing.

His silver hair barely moved in the wind.

Behind him walked twelve attorneys.

Six financial investigators.

Four former federal prosecutors.

And a woman carrying one thin leather folder.

Richard accepted it without speaking.

He opened the file.

On the first page was a single photograph.

Claire.

Age twenty-three.

Smiling beside Adrian on their wedding day.

Richard stared at it for several seconds.

Then quietly closed the folder.

"I warned him."

One attorney nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"He believed the transfer agreement made everything permanent."

Richard looked toward the city lights.

"He only read page one."

Back at the mansion...

The front gate suddenly opened.

Not for Adrian.

For a convoy of black SUVs.

Every servant watched through the windows.

The vehicles stopped in perfect formation.

Men in dark suits stepped out.

Each wore the silver crest of Lawson Global Holdings.

The lead attorney walked calmly to the front door.

He knocked once.

Not loudly.

Confidently.

Adrian yanked the door open.

"What is this?"

The attorney handed him an envelope.

"You've been formally notified."

"Notified of what?"

The attorney remained expressionless.

"As of 11:47 p.m., every asset held under Collins Luxury Development has reverted to its original ownership."

Adrian laughed.

"You people are insane."

"I own this house."

The attorney slowly lifted his eyes.

"No, Mr. Collins."

"You only leased it."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"What?"

"The lease expired... the moment Claire Lawson revoked her authorization."

For the first time that night...

Fear entered Adrian Collins' eyes.
