CHAPTER 5 — HER REAL BIRTHDAY

One year later...
The same house looked completely different.
The marble floors were still there.
The garden still bloomed beneath the summer sun.
But fear no longer lived inside its walls.
Valeria had transformed the property into a community center for women escaping abusive relationships.
The dining room where she had once been humiliated now hosted legal workshops.
The kitchen where she had cried alone became a place where volunteers prepared meals for families starting over.
The study—where forged documents had nearly stolen her future—was now filled with books, children's drawings, and shelves of legal resources.
Above the entrance hung a small bronze plaque.
The Salgado Foundation.
No One Suffers Alone.
On her thirty-first birthday, there were no extravagant decorations.
No expensive guests.
No performances.
Just laughter.
Children played in the garden.
Women who had rebuilt their lives shared homemade food beneath the trees.
Ernesto arrived carrying a small box wrapped in blue paper.
"This one's a real birthday present," he said with a smile.
Inside was her late mother's wristwatch, freshly restored after years in storage.
"I was waiting until you no longer needed me to protect you," Ernesto said softly.
"Now it's time for you to carry your mother's strength."
Valeria fastened the watch around her wrist.
For a moment, she looked toward the front gate where police cars had once arrived.
It no longer reminded her of fear.
It reminded her of the day silence ended.
She raised a glass of sparkling cider.
"To second chances," she said.
"And to every person who finds the courage to tell the truth."
The applause that followed was gentle.
Real.
Earned.
This time, it truly was her birthday.
May you like
And for the first time in years...
She smiled without pretending.
