CHAPTER 3 — THE HOUSE OF LIES COLLAPSES

The first video began to play.

No sound.

Only images.

Valeria kneeling on the kitchen floor.

Scrubbing spilled wine while Julián stood above her.

The timestamp showed four months earlier.

Then the audio returned.

"If you cry..."

Julián's voice laughed.

"I'll make you start over."

Several birthday guests immediately looked away.

Others stared at Julián in disbelief.

Another clip.

Valeria serving dinner.

Ofelia deliberately pushed an entire plate onto the floor.

"You forgot the salt."

Then she smiled.

"Clean it."

Another recording.

Valeria holding an ice pack against her swollen cheek.

Julián adjusted the camera.

"Tell everyone you walked into the cabinet."

She whispered exactly what he demanded.

The investigator quietly stopped the video.

There was enough.

The Women's Justice advocate walked outside to the garden.

Valeria sat silently beneath a jacaranda tree.

"You don't have to apologize anymore."

Valeria looked confused.

"For what?"

"For surviving."

Those words broke something inside her.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

For the first time in nearly a year...

She cried.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she finally realized someone believed her.

Inside the house, Ofelia was growing desperate.

She pointed at Ernesto.

"You planned this!"

"You're manipulating everyone!"

Ernesto finally looked at her.

"No."

"I simply waited until your son confessed in front of witnesses."

Then he turned toward the guests.

"Did anyone hear him admit striking my daughter?"

Hands slowly rose.

One.

Then three.

Then eight.

Even two of Julián's closest friends nodded.

One whispered,

"We thought he was joking."

Ernesto answered quietly,

"Abusers often hide behind jokes."

Nobody disagreed.

The investigator stepped beside Julián.

"Mr. Herrera..."

"You are being detained on suspicion of domestic violence, coercive control, document fraud, and financial crimes."

Julián's face lost every trace of confidence.

He looked toward his mother.

May you like

She couldn't save him anymore.

Because she was about to lose everything herself.
