CHAPTER 2 — THE EVIDENCE THEY THREW AWAY

The birthday music stopped.

The only sound left inside the elegant house was the slow click of leather shoes crossing the marble floor.

The two investigators didn't rush.

Neither did the woman from the Women's Justice Center.

The forensic examiner calmly opened his silver case beside the dining table.

No one spoke.

Because everyone suddenly understood this was no longer a family argument.

It was an investigation.

Julián forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

He spread his arms toward the guests.

"My father-in-law always loved drama."

No one laughed.

Not this time.

Ernesto slowly reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.

"I filed a request for emergency intervention thirty-six hours ago."

He looked directly at the investigators.

"The victim feared retaliation if she reported the abuse herself."

One investigator nodded.

"We have judicial authorization."

Julián's confidence flickered.

"You can't search my house."

The investigator calmly handed him the warrant.

"We already can."

Across the room, Ofelia finally realized she had been seen.

She was still kneeling beside the storage cabinet.

One hand gripped the black trash bag.

The forensic examiner walked toward her.

"Ma'am..."

She hugged the bag against her chest.

"These are just old papers."

The examiner didn't argue.

He simply waited.

The investigator gently removed the bag from her trembling hands.

Inside were shredded envelopes...

Burned photographs...

A broken phone...

And a thick bank envelope wrapped in plastic.

Valeria watched through the terrace doors.

Her breathing became shallow.

That envelope.

She remembered it perfectly.

Three nights earlier she had accidentally entered the study while Ofelia and Julián were whispering.

She had seen her own signature.

Only...

She had never signed anything.

The examiner carefully removed the papers.

Silence spread again.

One investigator slowly unfolded the first document.

Home equity loan.

Borrower:

Valeria Salgado.

Loan amount:

Nine million pesos.

Signature:

Valeria Salgado.

Ernesto didn't even glance at the paper.

He already knew.

"Compare it with her passport signature."

The investigator did.

His expression changed immediately.

"They don't match."

Julián suddenly stepped forward.

"She's my wife."

"I signed on her behalf."

The room froze.

The investigator slowly looked up.

"You just admitted forgery."

Julián blinked.

Too late.

His own words had become evidence.

Then the forensic examiner opened the broken cellphone found inside the trash bag.

The screen cracked...

But the memory card survived.

He inserted it into a portable reader.

Dozens of deleted videos appeared.

Valeria felt her stomach twist.

She knew exactly what they would find.

Months...

Of humiliation.

Months...

Of pain.

Recorded by the very man who enjoyed creating it.

No one smiled anymore.

May you like

Not even Julián.

Because the birthday party had only been the beginning.
