Chapter 8 - THE MORNING THE WORLD HEARD TWO STORIES

At 6:03 a.m., business channels repeated Julian’s acquisition announcement.

AURELIA RESORTS CHANGES OWNERSHIP.

JULIAN VALE TAKES CONTROL OF GLOBAL LUXURY EMPIRE.

ELENA VALE DEPARTS AFTER PRIVATE HEALTH CRISIS.

The prepared articles contained quotes from Adrian.

From Marcus.

From unnamed lenders.

The lie looked organized.

That made it credible.

Our corrections began five minutes later.

The Laurent Heritage Trust issued a statement denying any sale.

The bank confirmed that the forty-two-million-dollar transfer had been blocked.

The board announced Julian’s suspension.

Then confusion replaced celebration.

Markets hate two stories.

Reporters gathered outside the resort.

Guests watched from balconies.

Employees checked phones between breakfast service.

Julian stood in the lobby giving interviews before security could legally remove him from public areas.

“This is a family dispute,” he told cameras.

“Elena is reacting emotionally to personal betrayal.”

“The acquisition was approved months ago.”

“My wife knew.”

I watched from the conference room.

My father asked:

“Do you want to answer now?”

“Yes.”

“Angry?”

“Yes.”

“Then wait five minutes.”

He had taught me that anger contained information.

It did not always choose useful language.

I waited.

Then I entered the ballroom where reporters had gathered.

I did not wear a suit.

I still wore the dark blue dress from the previous evening.

The same dress in which security had escorted me outside.

I stood before the cameras.

“My name is Elena Laurent Vale.”

“It is true that my husband had me removed from the Aurelia Grand last night.”

“It is true that he was with another woman.”

“It is also true that he announced an acquisition that never occurred.”

A reporter shouted:

“Who owns Aurelia Resorts?”

“The Laurent Heritage Trust owns the principal properties, land, brand rights, and capital entities.”

“Do you control the trust?”

“I am its primary voting beneficiary.”

The room erupted.

“Did your husband know?”

“He signed the structure documents.”

“Why did he call it his empire?”

“You will need to ask him.”

“Did you hide your wealth?”

“I lived privately.”

“I did not hide legal ownership from any executive obligated to read contracts.”

“Are you removing him because of adultery?”

“No.”

“He was removed after evidence of unauthorized transfers, false invoices, forged medical documents, theft of trust property, and attempted misappropriation of reserve funds.”

A reporter asked the question Julian wanted.

“Are you mentally stable enough to lead?”

I looked directly into the camera.

“The doctor who declared me unstable has never examined me.”

“He is my husband’s brother.”

“The certificate claims I was hospitalized on dates when I was chairing recorded meetings.”

“The evidence will be provided to investigators.”

Another reporter asked whether the resorts were safe.

That question mattered more.

“Yes.”

“Guest operations remain stable.”

“Employee payroll is protected.”

“Safety reserves have been secured.”

“No property is being sold.”

I announced an independent audit.

Whistleblower protection.

Temporary employee representation on the executive committee.

And immediate review of delayed maintenance projects.

Julian had built his public identity around ownership.

I answered with responsibility.

The difference became visible.

Then a reporter held up a tablet.

Camila had posted a video.

She sat inside a police interview room.

“I was misled by both Julian and Elena.”

“Elena concealed the company’s ownership.”

“Julian told me she was mentally unstable.”

“I believed I was helping complete a lawful acquisition.”

The video made her look like a victim caught between wealthy spouses.

She did not mention the four million dollars.

The stolen files.

The emerald pendant.

Or the syringe.

Her attorney had started a third story.

Before I could respond, Sofia approached.

“We found the employee who triggered Julian’s broadcast.”

“Who?”

“Your executive assistant.”

I stared at her.

“My assistant?”

“Marina Cole.”

Marina had worked beside me for seven years.

She knew every schedule.

Every password request.

May you like

Every private medical appointment.

She had also been the person who told me the emerald pendant must have been lost during travel.
