Chapter 6 - THE UNCLE WHO WANTED THE TRUST

Adrian Laurent had spent his life believing my father stole his future.
They were born eleven months apart.
My grandfather chose Gabriel as successor trustee.
Adrian received money.
Properties.
A board seat.
But not control.
He never forgave the decision.
When I became the primary beneficiary, Adrian challenged the trust.
He lost.
Then he disappeared from family meetings for years.
I had seen him twice since my wedding.
Both times, he treated Julian with surprising warmth.
I believed he had finally accepted us.
He had been recruiting my husband.
Naomi opened the Meridian Coast records.
Adrian controlled the offshore company through three nominees.
Julian served as transaction director.
Camila’s brother handled technology.
Dr. Marcus Vale prepared medical documents.
The plan was larger than an affair.
Adrian wanted to break the Laurent Trust.
Julian wanted the resorts.
Camila wanted a title and money.
Marcus wanted access to the family’s medical foundation.
Each believed the others could be discarded later.
My father’s face remained still.
“How long?”
“First payment eighteen months ago,” Naomi said.
“Contact between Adrian and Julian began four years ago.”
Four years.
One year before Julian gave Camila my grandmother’s emerald.
The pendant may have been more than a gift.
The back contained a family seal.
That seal matched the embossing on certain historical ownership documents.
Adrian may have asked Julian to steal it for authentication.
I looked at the pendant beneath the lamp.
The clasp had been scratched.
Someone had opened the rear casing.
Naomi called the trust archivist.
The emerald pendant contained a tiny folded parchment.
My grandmother had hidden it there during political unrest in the 1970s.
It listed original property boundaries for the Aurelia Coast, Lake Como, and the Alpine retreat.
The parchment could support a fraudulent claim if combined with forged transfer documents.
Julian had given Camila the pendant because Adrian’s people had already copied what they needed.
The missing jewelry report was part of the cover.
My marriage had become an access point into the family archive.
I called Camila back into the room.
She had changed into hotel clothing.
The black dress had been collected as evidence because a trust master key was sewn into the lining.
“Did Adrian ever speak to you?”
She hesitated.
“Once.”
“When?”
“Last year in Monaco.”
“What did he ask?”
“He wanted to know whether you wore the emerald often.”
“Anything else?”
“He asked where your father stored original deeds.”
“What did you say?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Did Julian?”
“He said the pendant would lead them to the archive.”
My father closed his eyes.
Julian had listened during family conversations.
Collected fragments.
Watched codes.
Photographed keys.
The behavior we mistook for interest had been surveillance.
Camila continued.
“Julian said Adrian was the rightful owner.”
“Adrian told him the trust was created through fraud.”
“That the resorts belonged to his branch.”
“He said Elena’s father controlled everyone by hiding documents.”
My father looked at her.
“Did Adrian show proof?”
“No.”
“He said the proof would appear after the acquisition.”
Adrian had built a story around resentment.
Julian had accepted it because it gave moral language to greed.
He was not stealing.
He was correcting history.
He was not betraying his wife.
He was freeing an empire from an unfair trust.
People become dangerous when they find a noble explanation for what they already want.
Naomi received a call.
Adrian’s private jet had left Geneva.
Its destination was the small airport near the Aurelia Grand.
“He’s coming here,” I said.
My father looked toward the storm.
“No.”
“He believes he is coming to take control.”
At 3:11 a.m., Adrian sent a message to the entire board.
He claimed Gabriel Laurent was medically incapacitated.
He claimed I had suffered a psychological crisis after discovering Julian’s affair.
He called an emergency trust meeting for 5:00 a.m.
Attached were forged medical certificates.
If the meeting proceeded without us, Adrian intended to declare himself temporary trust protector.

Then he could validate the offshore sale.
We had less than two hours to stop a family coup.
