Chapter 10 - THE BOAT BEYOND THE CLIFFS

The boat was named Sovereign.

Julian had bought it with a company recreation budget.

He told the board it would entertain investors.

It entertained Camila more often.

A coast-guard patrol located it twelve miles offshore.

Adrian refused instructions to return.

Oliver Crane claimed the vessel carried confidential banking records outside local jurisdiction.

He was wrong about jurisdiction.

He was not wrong about danger.

If the original insurance certificates disappeared, Crane could present forged versions.

The debt fund would declare defaults Monday morning.

We needed verified copies before the banking window opened.

Marina gave us access to Julian’s boat server.

The connection failed.

Sofia remembered something.

“The Sovereign mirrors files to the penthouse media system.”

“Julian liked watching security feeds from the boat.”

Technicians opened the penthouse network.

A hidden folder appeared.

COVENANT STRATEGY.

It contained every forged report.

Fire systems marked incomplete.

Elevator inspections deleted.

Flood insurance shown as expired.

The actual certificates were stored in another encrypted folder.

We copied everything to the trust archive and sent verified documents to lenders.

Crane’s default strategy collapsed.

Then a live camera opened accidentally.

Adrian stood inside the boat cabin.

Oliver Crane argued with him.

“You said the reserve transfer went through.”

“Julian failed.”

“You assured me Elena had no direct authority.”

“She was not supposed to activate it.”

Crane looked toward the door.

“We return and negotiate.”

Adrian grabbed his arm.

“We do not return.”

The camera shifted.

A third man entered.

Dr. Marcus Vale.

He carried a medical case.

Adrian said:

“We still have Elena’s instability file.”

“The public story is working.”

Crane laughed.

“No lender will seize a solvent property because a husband calls his wife unstable.”

Marcus answered:

“They will if she is hospitalized before Monday.”

The room around me became silent.

Marcus had prepared the sedative in the penthouse.

He still had access to medical supplies.

And he was speaking as though another attempt remained possible.

My father contacted the coast guard.

They boarded the Sovereign thirty minutes later.

Adrian was detained.

Crane demanded a lawyer.

Marcus was arrested after officers found controlled medication and forged prescriptions.

The original certificates were recovered.

So were several trust seals.

The financial coup ended before noon.

But Julian remained at the resort.

He had not been arrested yet.

Investigators were still establishing his direct role in the attempted medication plan.

When police approached him in the lobby, he produced a court order.

The order temporarily prohibited the trust from removing him from the marital penthouse or disposing of assets he claimed were jointly owned.

The judge had signed it at 7:20 a.m.

Julian’s attorney argued that the dispute was marital.

That the offshore payments were executive decisions.

That my family was using hidden ownership to deprive him of property earned during marriage.

The order did not restore his executive access.

But it allowed him to return to the penthouse under police supervision.

I watched him enter the suite where Camila had worn my grandmother’s pendant.

He smiled.

“You thought sunrise would destroy me.”

“No.”

I looked at the officers around him.

“I thought it would show everyone what you are.”

He leaned closer.

“You still don’t understand.”

“I have copies of every message you sent your father.”

“Every trust decision.”

“Every transfer.”

“I can make you look like the fraud.”

Then he opened the bedroom safe.

The passports were gone.

The cash was gone.

The acquisition documents were gone.

Police had removed them.

His smile vanished.

I handed him the court inventory.

“Everything is evidence now.”

Julian looked toward the balcony.

For one second, I thought he might run.

Instead, he said something quieter.

“You owe me half.”

“Half of what?”

May you like

“Everything I built while married to you.”

The divorce war had begun before the criminal investigation ended.
