Chapter Eight: The Fall of the Mercer Empire

By Monday morning, every major business news outlet in Chicago carried the same headline.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS EXPAND PROBE INTO MERCER TECHNOLOGIES.
Television vans crowded the street outside the company's headquarters. Employees gathered in small groups, whispering as they watched federal agents enter the building with evidence boxes.
Inside a secure conference room, Evelyn sat beside federal investigators, the company's legal team, and Hart Global's board representatives.
The flash drive Vanessa had surrendered lay on the polished table.
One recording played through the room.
Grant's voice was unmistakable.
"Once the money is transferred overseas, no one will ever trace it back to us."
Another recording followed.
"Vanessa, sign the documents. After that, none of this becomes your problem."
Then came the final recording.
The one made the night of the crash.
Grant's angry voice filled the speakers.
"If you refuse me now, you'll lose everything!"
A loud scraping sound followed.
Vanessa screaming.
Tires screeching.
Then silence.
No one in the room spoke.
The lead federal investigator quietly switched off the audio.
"That's enough."
Across town, Grant sat in Richard Whitmore's office.
His attorney looked exhausted.
"The U.S. Attorney's Office has filed criminal complaints."
Grant stared blankly.
"They can't prove intent."
Richard slowly pushed another folder toward him.
"They don't have to."
Inside were printed transcripts.
Bank records.
Email chains.
Voice recordings.
Security footage.
Signed statements from Vanessa.
And one final document.
Affidavit of Cooperation.
Grant looked up.
"She testified?"
Richard nodded.
"Under oath."
Grant's hands began to tremble.
"No..."
He whispered the word more to himself than anyone else.
"She promised she'd never betray me."
Richard met his eyes.
"I think she finally realized you betrayed her first."
That afternoon, federal agents arrived at the Mercer townhouse.
This time, they weren't searching.
They were making arrests.
Marian watched helplessly from the front steps as Grant was escorted outside in handcuffs.
Camera flashes exploded from every direction.
Reporters shouted questions.
"Mr. Mercer! Did you steal company funds?"
"Did you cause the accident?"
"Do you have a statement?"
Grant said nothing.
His eyes searched the crowd until they found a familiar black sedan parked across the street.
Evelyn stood beside it.
She wore a navy wool coat, her hands tucked calmly into her pockets.
She hadn't come to celebrate.
She had come to witness the end.
For a long moment, Grant simply stared at her.
"I loved you," he said quietly.
Evelyn looked at him with an expression that held neither anger nor satisfaction.
"I believe you loved the version of me who never questioned you."
The agents guided him toward the waiting vehicle.
Before the door closed, Grant spoke one last time.
"I'm sorry."
Evelyn nodded once.
"I know."
The SUV pulled away.
Its red taillights disappeared into the gray Chicago afternoon.
Beside Evelyn, Liam exhaled slowly.
"It's over."
She watched the empty street for another moment before answering.
"No."
May you like
A faint smile crossed her face.
"It's finally the beginning."
