Chapter Two: The New Regional Director

Grant Mercer arrived at Mercer Technologies forty minutes early.

He barely slept.

Evelyn's words from the night before kept replaying in his head.

Tomorrow, my husband learns who he married.

He dismissed them as empty drama.

Evelyn had always been intelligent, but she was an HR coordinator. Whatever assignment she imagined she had received, it certainly had nothing to do with the executive board gathering unexpectedly at headquarters.

The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor.

Something felt different.

Assistants hurried through the corridors carrying thick briefing binders. Security officers stood outside the boardroom entrance. Even the company's legal counsel, who rarely appeared before noon, was already inside.

Grant caught sight of Chief Financial Officer Daniel Brooks.

"What's going on?"

Daniel looked unusually tense.

"Didn't London tell you?"

"Tell me what?"

"The board appointed a new Regional Director to oversee North American operations."

Grant frowned.

"They're replacing someone?"

"No."

Daniel lowered his voice.

"They're restructuring everyone."

Before Grant could ask another question, the boardroom doors opened.

Every executive stood.

The room fell silent.

A woman entered wearing a charcoal tailored suit beneath a long ivory coat. Her dark hair was neatly pinned back, and the quiet confidence in her stride commanded attention without effort.

Grant's heartbeat stumbled.

"Evelyn?"

She didn't even look at him.

Instead, she walked calmly to the head of the conference table.

Liam Foster stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Director Evelyn Hart, newly appointed Regional Director for North America on behalf of Hart Global Holdings."

A wave of confusion swept through the room.

Grant laughed once.

"This has to be some kind of mistake."

No one joined him.

Liam simply placed a leather portfolio before Evelyn.

She opened it, signed one document, and looked around the table with composed professionalism.

"Good morning."

Her voice was calm, almost gentle.

"Thank you all for adjusting your schedules on such short notice."

Grant stared as though seeing a stranger.

"What are you doing?"

Only then did Evelyn meet his eyes.

"I believe," she said evenly, "I'm beginning today's audit."

The large screen behind her illuminated.

Mercer Technologies: Executive Financial Integrity Review

Grant's name appeared at the top of the list.

His confidence evaporated.

Across the table, directors exchanged uneasy glances while legal counsel quietly opened their folders.

The meeting had not been called to welcome a new executive.

It had been called to determine who would still have a job when the day was over.

And for the first time since their marriage, Grant realized he had completely underestimated the woman he had spent years trying to diminish.
