Chapter Seven: The Truth Between Two Women

Evelyn chose a quiet private lounge inside the Palmer House for the meeting.
She arrived ten minutes early.
At exactly seven o'clock, Vanessa entered in a wheelchair pushed by a physical therapist hired by the rehabilitation center. Her face was pale, untouched by makeup, and she looked years older than she had only a week before.
"I almost turned around," Vanessa admitted.
"You still can."
Vanessa shook her head.
"I'm tired of protecting him."
After the therapist stepped outside, neither woman spoke for several moments.
Finally, Vanessa reached into her handbag and placed a small flash drive on the table.
"This is why Grant panicked."
Evelyn didn't touch it.
"What's on it?"
"Copies of emails. Insurance documents. Voice recordings."
She lowered her eyes.
"And something else."
"The night of the accident, we weren't coming back from a client dinner."
"I know."
"We were driving to Milwaukee."
Evelyn frowned.
"For what?"
"Grant wanted me to sign papers creating a new consulting company in my name."
Vanessa swallowed hard.
"He said it would save taxes."
"But it didn't."
"No."
She looked directly at Evelyn.
"It would've hidden millions of dollars."
The realization settled over the room like heavy fog.
Grant hadn't merely been spending company money.
He had been building an escape route.
"What happened on the highway?" Evelyn asked softly.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I told him I wasn't signing anything until I spoke with my own lawyer."
Her voice cracked.
"He became furious."
"He started yelling... saying I'd destroy everything he'd worked for."
She took a slow breath.
"We were crossing a bridge when he grabbed the steering wheel."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"He grabbed it?"
Vanessa nodded.
"I tried to pull away. The car hit the guardrail."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I don't remember anything after that."
Silence hung between them.
The police report had blamed black ice.
Now the story looked very different.
Vanessa pushed the flash drive toward Evelyn.
"I lied because I loved him."
She laughed bitterly.
"Then I lied because I was afraid of him."
Evelyn finally picked up the drive.
"Why tell me now?"
"Because you're the only person who's never lied to me."
Those words caught Evelyn by surprise.
Vanessa looked toward the window overlooking Chicago's glowing skyline.
"I spent months believing I had stolen another woman's husband."
She smiled sadly.
"But I think we were both victims of the same man."
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
She simply extended her hand.
After a brief hesitation, Vanessa took it.
Not as rivals.
Not as friends.
But as two women who finally understood they had been manipulated by the same carefully constructed illusion.
Outside, snow began to fall again.
Inside, the alliance Grant Mercer had feared most had just been formed.

By morning, the flash drive would be in federal custody.
And the empire he had spent his life protecting would begin collapsing from the inside out.
