Chapter 7 - The Company We Built Was Already Being Sold

Carter Urban Development began in a rented office above a dry cleaner.

Ryan and I had two desks.

One printer.

Three clients.

I worked fourteen-hour days.

He handled sales.

I handled financing and project analysis.

When we could not afford an assistant, I answered phones.

When our first major client refused payment, I covered payroll from my savings.

The company grew.

Then it exploded.

Hotels.

Residential towers.

Retail centers.

Mixed-use developments.

By our third wedding anniversary, our company was valued at more than $180 million.

I had always believed Ryan and I built it together.

Now I discovered he had been quietly selling pieces of our future.

Grace gathered documents.

Emails.

Draft agreements.

Side letters.

One promised an offshore investment group twenty-two percent of development revenue from projects our company had not approved.

Another guaranteed Madeline’s father priority investment access.

A third pledged land owned by one of our subsidiaries as collateral.

My signature appeared on two drafts.

Fake.

Again.

Ryan had become comfortable using my name before he ever used his hands against me.

The physical violence shocked me.

The financial violence had been happening quietly for months.

My father studied the documents with Grace.

“You can stop the transfers?”

He asked.

“Yes.”

She replied.

“Elena’s majority ownership gives her authority.”

“Then stop everything.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

“Freeze everything.”

I said.

“Don’t cancel.”

Grace understood immediately.

“If we cancel now, people disappear.”

Exactly.

I wanted to see who came looking for their money.

Within six hours, three investors called.

Then five.

Then an attorney from Delaware.

Then a man named Alexander Pierce flew to Nashville requesting an emergency meeting.

He represented the offshore group.

Grace and Detective Mitchell arranged it under controlled circumstances.

Alexander walked into the conference room expecting Ryan.

He found me instead.

My leg was immobilized.

I sat in a wheelchair.

My father sat behind me.

Grace sat beside me.

Alexander’s confidence disappeared.

“Mrs. Carter.”

He said.

“I was told you were medically incapacitated.”

“By whom?”

He hesitated.

“Your husband.”

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

Before the staircase.

Before my broken leg.

May you like

Before any legitimate reason existed.

Ryan had already been telling investors I would become incapacitated.
