Chapter 15 - Madeline’s Final Evidence
Madeline contacted prosecutors through her attorney.
She had found an old phone.
One Ryan forgot existed.
They used it during the first months of their affair.
The device contained photographs.
Messages.
Voice notes.
One audio recording was devastating.
Ryan’s voice.
“I don’t need Elena gone forever.”
“I need her unable to sign for a few months.”
Madeline answered.
“What happens after?”
“Once the financing closes, it won’t matter.”
“Then what?”
Ryan laughed.
“She can divorce me if she wants.”
The recording was dated six weeks before my fall.
Another conversation mentioned Marcus.
Madeline asked who he was.
Ryan replied.
“Insurance.”
Not an insurance agent.
Insurance.
A backup plan.
Madeline claimed she never understood what he meant.
I wanted to hate her completely.
It would have been easier.
But people can be guilty of one thing and ignorant of another.
Madeline betrayed me.
She slept with my husband.
She benefited from his business promises.
She watched him hurt me and hesitated too long.
But the evidence suggested she did not know about the planned vehicle sabotage.
Her cooperation became central to the prosecution.
Then she gave me something personal.
A letter.
I almost refused to read it.
Eventually, I did.
Elena,
I don’t expect forgiveness.
I don’t deserve it.
I kept telling myself your marriage was already dead because that made what I was doing easier to live with.
Ryan told me you cared only about the company.
He told me you barely spoke.
He told me you planned to leave after the downtown deal.
I wanted to believe him because I wanted him.
That part is mine.
What happened on the stairs showed me something I should have seen earlier.
He did not choose me over you.
He chose himself over both of us.
I am sorry I helped him hurt you before he ever laid a hand on you.
Madeline.
I folded the letter.
I did not forgive her.
Not then.
Maybe not ever.
But hatred stopped feeling useful.
The trial date was set.
Ryan faced charges related to assault, unlawful confinement, conspiracy, fraud, forgery, and attempted sabotage.
The business case continued separately.
The divorce continued too.
Then the prosecutor called.
They had received an offer.
Ryan would plead guilty to several charges.
But only if prosecutors dropped the allegation connected to the planned car accident.
Marcus’s testimony would be tested.
