Chapter 19 - One Year After the Staircase

One year after Ryan pushed me down the stairs, I returned to the old house.
The new owners allowed me inside before renovations began.
I almost canceled.
Then I decided fear did not deserve permanent ownership either.
The marble remained.
The staircase remained.
The chandelier remained.
But the blood was gone.
The flowers were gone.
Ryan was gone.
I stood at the bottom of the staircase.
My leg ached.
I looked upward.
For months, that staircase existed in my mind as the place my life ended.
Now I understood something different.
My old life ended there.
Not me.
I walked up slowly.
One step.
Then another.
My cane touched each stair.
At the top, I entered the bedroom.
Empty.
No silk robe.
No expensive heels.
No bourbon gift.
Nothing.
I stood where I had slapped Madeline.
I did not regret confronting them.
I regretted the years before it.
The years I ignored small humiliations because they were easier than admitting what my marriage had become.
Before leaving, I walked into the basement.
That was harder.
I stood inside with the door open.
Then I turned off the light.
Darkness surrounded me.
My heart accelerated.
I almost stepped outside immediately.
Instead, I stayed.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Then I opened the door myself.
That mattered.
Outside, my father waited beside the car.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
I meant it.
That evening, I hosted dinner.
Grace came.
Detective Mitchell came.
Several company employees came.
My father brought wine.
No huge celebration.
No victory speech.
At dessert, Dominic raised his glass.
“To Elena.”
I gave him a warning look.
He smiled.
“Not because she survived.”
He said.
“Because she chose what came after.”
That toast stayed with me.
May you like
Survival was not the ending.
Choice was.
