Chapter Four: The Clean Break

Late afternoon sunlight filtered through the windows of a quiet café near the judicial district.

The lunchtime crowd had already disappeared.

Only soft jazz drifted through the nearly empty room.

Sofia sat in a corner booth.

A dark wool coat covered the cream satin blouse she'd worn the night before.

A small beige bandage now concealed the cut on her cheek.

Across from her sat her attorney.

Without speaking, he slid a single sheet of thick bond paper across the table.

Mutual Release Agreement.

One signature.

One final ending.

"They agreed," he said quietly.

Sofia looked down at the document.

"Julian doesn't want public litigation."

A brief pause.

"Eleanor wants the trust unlocked."

He folded his hands.

"You restore access to the ledger."

"They grant the divorce immediately."

No property disputes.

No appeals.

No further obligations.

Only freedom.

Sofia read every line.

Carefully.

Without rushing.

There was no triumph in her face.

No satisfaction.

No desire for revenge.

Only something she hadn't felt in years.

Peace.

She picked up the heavy black fountain pen beside the folder.

Her signature flowed smoothly across the final page.

She closed the folder and slid it back.

Her attorney watched her for a moment.

"Is it finally over?"

Sofia turned toward the café window.

Outside, people hurried along crowded sidewalks, carrying coffee cups, umbrellas, and ordinary lives that continued without noticing hers.

She realized her breathing had become perfectly steady.

Her shoulders no longer carried invisible weight.

For the first time in years...

she felt light.

A faint smile touched the corner of her lips.

May you like

"Yes," she said softly.

"It's finally over."
