Chapter Three: The Gathering Storm

By noon, the boardroom inside Miller Holdings felt suffocating.
Sunlight poured through the glass walls, yet the room seemed strangely dark.
Julian sat alone at the head of the long oak conference table.
His hands were clasped so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
Across from him, two senior attorneys reviewed digital documents displayed across several tablets.
Neither looked pleased.
Finally, the older attorney removed his glasses.
"The prenuptial agreement you insisted she sign yesterday," he began carefully, "works both ways."
Julian remained silent.
"It protects your personal assets."
He paused.
"But the donation trust clause required Mrs. Miller's active digital authorization every thirty days."
He tapped the screen.
"She canceled the recurring payment."
Another tap.
"Then revoked her authentication token."
The attorney looked directly at Julian.
"As of this morning..."
"...forty percent of your operating capital is effectively frozen."
The boardroom door opened.
Eleanor entered without speaking.
Her eyes moved from the attorneys to her son.
"Fix it."
No one answered.
"I said fix it."
The senior attorney folded his hands.
"We can't."
She stared at him.
"Sue her."
His expression didn't change.
"We have no legal basis."
"What?"
"The agreement specifically allows her to suspend trust access if she believes she signed under coercion or emotional distress."
The room grew impossibly quiet.
He continued.
"Considering the condition she was in when she left your residence last night..."
"...a public court proceeding would expose matters this family is unlikely to survive."
Julian slowly closed his eyes.
He remembered Sofia standing in the doorway.
The scratch across her face.
The complete absence of fear in her eyes.
When she'd said, I'm leaving...
He'd mistaken it for surrender.
Now he understood.
It hadn't been surrender at all.
May you like
It had been patience.
The quiet patience of someone who already knew exactly where to pull the trigger.
