Chapter Two: The Tremor Beneath the Foundation

At six o'clock the following morning, the Miller penthouse should have been silent.
Instead, the sharp vibration of a cellphone skidded across a slab of white marble.
Julian Miller grabbed it before the second notification.
His dark hair was still disheveled from a sleepless night. The top button of his white dress shirt remained undone.
Across the room, Eleanor Miller stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the waking skyline.
She wore a black silk robe instead of last night's designer gown.
A cup of black coffee rested lightly in her hand.
"What is it?" she asked without turning around.
Julian stared at the screen.
The muscles along his jaw tightened.
A nearly invisible twitch appeared beneath his left eye.
"The foundation trust."
His voice sounded strangely hollow.
"The monthly transfer to the offshore holding was rejected."
Silence.
Eleanor didn't move.
But the coffee inside her cup rippled.
"That's impossible."
Her voice remained low, though all authority had quietly drained from it.
"She signed the prenuptial donation clause."
Julian swallowed.
Then the realization struck.
Not suddenly.
Slowly.
Like ice spreading through water.
"No..."
He looked up.
"She never transferred the routing authority."
He exhaled heavily.
"She wasn't just my wife."
His eyes remained fixed on the notification.
"She was the only person authorized to validate the digital ledger."
Another pause.
Then, almost under his breath—
May you like
"She didn't leave us."
"She cut us off."
