CHAPTER 5 â The Truth They Tried to Bury

The hospital room was completely silent.
Even the machines seemed quieter.
Emma watched the screen.
In the video, Brian stood in their living room late at night, speaking to Carol and Vanessa.
Not about an accident.
Not about panic.
But strategy.
âIf she has the baby, everything transfers to her name. The trust, the property, everything my father left behind.â
Carolâs voice:
âThen she doesnât get to have the baby.â
Vanessa:
âThere are ways to delay a hospital visit⌠permanently.â
Emmaâs hand slowly loosened from the bedrail.
Not from weakness.
From realization.
Everything had been planned.
The highway wasnât an accident.
It was the final step.
Footsteps filled the hallway.
Security arrived.
Then police.
Brian tried to speakâbut no words came out.
Carol backed away slowly.
Vanessa dropped her phone.
Emmaâs father walked into the room and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
âYouâre done surviving them,â he said.
âYouâre going home with your child. And theyâre not part of that story anymore.â
Emma closed her eyes.
For the first time that night, she wasnât afraid.
