Chapter 7 - THE NURSE WHO BETRAYED ME

I called Grace immediately.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

Again.

Again.

Nothing.

I wanted to believe there was an explanation.

Luka didn’t.

“She’s compromised.”

“She helped us.”

“So did my sister.”

His expression darkened.

“Until somebody threatened her.”

Mara read Grace’s statement aloud.

It claimed I had become paranoid after giving birth.

That I accused Ethan of altering hospital records without evidence.

That Luka had pressured me into leaving.

Every lie had been written carefully enough to sound reasonable.

At the end was one sentence that terrified me.

Mrs. Mercer may present a danger to herself and the infant.

I looked toward Emma.

“No judge can believe that.”

Mara met my eyes.

“A judge can believe anything if only one side brings evidence.”

“Then we bring evidence.”

Mara nodded.

“That’s what I was hoping you’d say.”

We worked for hours.

The financial transfers.

Ethan’s executive access logs.

The deleted screening report.

The recorded call where he admitted M-17 was about him.

Luka’s security footage showing Ethan leaving the hospital with Vanessa while I remained behind.

By midnight, Mara had enough to fight the custody order.

Then Luka received a message.

He read it twice.

“What?”

I asked.

“Grace.”

“Is she okay?”

“She sent me an address.”

Nothing else.

The address belonged to a motel twenty miles away.

Mara warned us not to go.

Luka agreed.

Then he went anyway.

I insisted on staying with Emma and Rosa.

Three hours later, Luka returned.

His coat was wet from rain.

His knuckles were bruised.

But Grace was beside him.

She looked terrified.

The moment she saw me, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t move.

“Why did you sign it?”

“They had my son.”

The anger disappeared from me.

Grace showed us photographs sent to her phone.

Her twenty-year-old son leaving college.

A black sedan following him.

Then a message.

SIGN THE STATEMENT OR HE DISAPPEARS.

“Who sent it?”

I asked.

Grace looked at Luka.

“Vanessa.”

The mistress.

The woman Ethan had walked out with.

But Grace had more.

She removed a memory card from beneath the lining of her shoe.

“I lied in the statement.”

She swallowed.

“But I stole something before they forced me out of the hospital.”

Luka inserted the card into his laptop.

A surveillance video appeared.

Ethan and Vanessa stood inside the hospital archive room.

The time stamp showed three hours before Emma was born.

Vanessa held a folder marked M-17.

Ethan looked directly at her.

Then he said,

“If Claire’s baby triggers the file, delete everything.”

Vanessa asked,

“And if she sees it first?”

Ethan answered calmly.

May you like

“Then make sure she never leaves the hospital with the child.”
