Chapter 5 - THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT

I listened to the recording three times.

Each time, the words hurt differently.

Ethan had told me we met by chance.

I was nineteen.

Working nights in a coffee shop near campus.

He came in during a storm.

Ordered black coffee.

Left a twenty-dollar tip.

Returned the next night.

Then the next.

He said I made him want a life that felt ordinary.

Now I understood.

He had been looking for me.

Luka opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a background report.

My name.

My university.

My dorm address.

My work schedule.

Photographs taken without my knowledge.

The report had been created two months before Ethan ever walked into the coffee shop.

At the bottom was an authorization code.

EM-04.

Ethan Mercer.

I sat down.

“He studied me.”

Luka nodded.

“He courted you according to a file.”

Every memory became contaminated.

Our first date.

Our first Christmas.

His proposal.

The apartment he insisted we use because it was “safer.”

The bank account he encouraged me to close.

The job he convinced me to leave.

Even my pregnancy.

My hand moved protectively toward Emma’s bassinet.

“Did he want the baby too?”

Luka didn’t answer quickly enough.

“Tell me.”

“M-17 could only be reopened through a biological match.”

My stomach dropped.

“He needed a child?”

“He may not have known exactly what would trigger the archive.”

“But he knew your father built genetic safeguards into the evidence chain.”

I stared at him.

“My father wasn’t a doctor.”

“No.”

“He was a federal financial investigator.”

“He followed money.”

“And the money led to Mercer Medical.”

Luka spread documents across the table.

Payments to judges.

Payments to physicians.

Payments to private adoption agencies.

Payments to women whose babies had disappeared from official records.

Seventeen cases.

M-1 through M-17.

One name appeared repeatedly beside the payments.

Richard Mercer.

Ethan’s father.

I whispered,

“What was M-17?”

Luka looked at me.

“The only infant they could never trace after the records were altered.”

“And now Emma’s blood sample has a genetic connection to that infant.”

I struggled to understand.

“Which means what?”

“It means M-17 grew up.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“And they’re related to my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Through me?”

Luka’s eyes held mine.

“We don’t know.”

I suddenly understood why he had signed the father line.

“You wanted Ethan forced into a DNA test.”

“Yes.”

“You used that form to make him challenge paternity.”

“Yes.”

Anger flashed through me.

“You manipulated me.”

“I bought you time.”

“You should have told me.”

“You had just given birth.”

“That doesn’t make me helpless.”

His expression softened.

“No.”

“It doesn’t.”

Then Rosa appeared in the doorway holding a phone.

“Luka.”

“There’s a man demanding to speak with Claire.”

I took it.

Ethan’s voice came through immediately.

“You have something that belongs to my family.”

I looked at the documents.

“No, Ethan.”

“You do.”

His breathing changed.

Then he whispered,

“Whatever Moretti told you, do not open M-17.”

I felt something inside me turn cold.

“Why?”

Ethan answered with five words.

May you like

“Because M-17 is about me.”
