Chapter 19 - THE LIFE THEY COULDN’T CONTROL

Three months later, Emma and I moved into a small house outside Alexandria.

I could have bought something enormous.

I didn’t want enormous.

I wanted windows I could open.

A kitchen that belonged to me.

A nursery I chose myself.

My father lived ten minutes away.

We were rebuilding slowly.

Some days I forgave him.

Some days I didn’t.

He understood both.

Vanessa testified against Richard.

The charges against her connected to Grace were reduced after investigators confirmed she had acted under threats from Ethan and Richard.

Grace returned to nursing at another hospital.

Her son was safe.

Mercer Medical received a new board and a new name.

Victims from the old maternity program began coming forward.

M-1.

M-2.

M-3.

Families who had spent decades believing their records were lost finally received answers.

Not all of them were happy answers.

But they were theirs.

Ethan accepted a plea agreement.

He surrendered his Mercer shares and agreed to testify.

The Moretti estate refused his attempt to claim inheritance through Vincent.

Luka could have fought him publicly.

Instead, he placed the disputed funds into a compensation trust for families harmed by Mercer Medical.

When I asked why, he shrugged.

“My father made money from silence.”

“I don’t want it.”

Luka visited Emma every Sunday.

Rosa came with him.

She called herself Emma’s honorary grandmother before anyone officially approved the title.

Emma adored her.

One evening, Luka stood beside the crib watching Emma sleep.

“You know something strange?”

I asked.

“That question usually ends badly.”

“The first thing you ever did when you met my daughter was sign yourself onto her birth paperwork.”

He looked embarrassed for possibly the first time in his life.

“It made sense at the time.”

“It was insane.”

“Also true.”

I smiled.

“What would you have done if Ethan never challenged it?”

“Spent a lot of money on lawyers.”

I laughed.

Then Luka became serious.

“I never wanted to replace anyone.”

“I know.”

“I only wanted her protected.”

“I know that too.”

Our eyes held for a moment.

Neither of us moved closer.

Some things didn’t need to be rushed.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Dad.

COME OVER.

NOW.

I immediately knew it wasn’t casual.

When Luka and I reached his house, my father had an old metal box on his kitchen table.

Different from M-17.

This one had the number nineteen scratched into the lid.

“Richard wasn’t bluffing.”

Dad said.

My stomach tightened.

“What is M-19?”

He looked at Emma sleeping in her carrier.

Then at me.

“M-19 was never about Ethan.”

“Then who?”

My father swallowed.

May you like

“You.”
