Chapter 5 - BLACKWATER ROAD

Luka was seventeen when he met my father.
He had been angry.
Homeless.
Running with people who were always one bad decision away from prison.
Thomas Carter caught him trying to steal tools from his garage.
Instead of calling police, my father gave him dinner.
Then a job.
Then a place to sleep.
Years later, Luka built a private security company with money he earned working legitimate contracts.
“My father did that?”
“He saved my life.”
Luka’s voice changed when he spoke about him.
“He never told anyone.”
“That sounds like him.”
For the first time, I felt something other than anger toward Luka.
Then he told me about Blackwater Road.
Eleven years earlier, my father had arranged to meet a federal investigator.
He carried copies of records connected to M-17.
Luka had been driving.
A black SUV followed them.
Then another.
Thomas realized they weren’t going to reach the meeting.
He ordered Luka to pull onto Blackwater Road.
The first SUV rammed them.
The car flipped.
Luka woke up bleeding beside the wreck.
My father was alive.
So were the men who had followed them.
“What happened?”
I whispered.
“Thomas told me to run with the drive.”
“You left him?”
“He made me.”
Luka’s jaw tightened.
“He stayed to draw them away.”
The blood police later found inside my father’s abandoned vehicle had been enough to suggest he was badly injured.
But he escaped.
Luka hid the evidence.
My father entered a protection network created by investigators who believed the corruption reached into local law enforcement.
The investigation collapsed when two witnesses disappeared.
Thomas remained hidden.
“And Adrian’s father?”
“Victor Vale was never charged.”
I looked at Grace.
“Why contact you three days ago?”
“Because someone accessed M-17.”
“Who?”
Luka hesitated.
“Adrian.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“No.”
“He used an internal Vale Foundation credential.”
“No.”
“He had a reason.”
“What reason?”
Luka placed a tablet in front of me.
A security image filled the screen.
Adrian stood inside an archive room at St. Catherine.
The date was eight months earlier.
I had been pregnant.
“He found the file after you conceived.”
Luka said.
“He learned Thomas had programmed a release trigger tied to the birth of your first child.”
My mouth went dry.
“So Adrian knew?”
“He knew something would be released.”
“Why did he stay with me?”
Luka’s answer hurt more than I expected.
“To find out where it was going.”
My marriage suddenly rearranged itself in my memory.
The questions Adrian asked about my father.
The boxes from my childhood.
The storage unit he insisted we clean.
The old files he volunteered to organize.
He hadn’t been helping me move on.
He had been searching.
“For six years?”
“Maybe not at first.”
Luka looked at me carefully.
“But eventually, yes.”
A knock interrupted us.
Mia opened the door.
Her face was pale.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“The hospital checked the newborn blood storage room.”
May you like
She looked at Grace.
“Your daughter’s blood card is missing.”
