Chapter 20 - M-18

Five years after Grace was born, I returned to St. Catherine Hospital.
Not as a patient.
As chair of the independent foundation created from the assets recovered after the Vale scandal.
The maternity wing had been renovated.
The old pale green walls were gone.
So were the administrators who had helped bury records.
Every mother now received written access to her complete treatment history.
Every fertility procedure required independent consent verification.
Every newborn genetic record had additional safeguards.
M-17 had destroyed my marriage.
It had returned my father.
It had exposed Adrian.
It had reunited two brothers.
It had revealed the truth about Grace.
But most importantly, it had forced secrets into daylight.
Grace was five.
She knew Daniel Mercer was the man whose donation helped create her.
She knew Rachel was her biological aunt.
She knew Adrian had been married to me when she was born.
She knew Luka was Daddy.
The rest would come when she was old enough.
Truth did not need to arrive all at once.
It simply needed to arrive without lies.
Adrian rebuilt a quiet life after completing his sentence.
He never regained the Vale fortune.
Victor died in prison after losing every appeal.
Michael and my father bought the orchard beside the lake house.
They argued constantly about apples.
Apparently thirty years apart had not improved their ability to agree on anything.
And Luka?
Luka still wore black.
Still terrified strangers.
Still had tattoos climbing his neck.
But every morning Grace climbed into our bed and used those tattoos as roads for her toy cars.
Sometimes I thought about the woman I had been in that hospital corridor.
Twenty-five.
Bleeding.
Terrified.
Holding a newborn while her husband walked away beside another woman.
I wanted to reach backward through time and tell her something.
Not that everything would be easy.
It wouldn’t.
Not that someone powerful would rescue her.
No one did.
Luka protected me.
Mia defended me.
My father gave me evidence.
But I had been the one who finally opened the envelope.
I had been the one who walked into the boardroom.
I had been the one who stopped allowing other people to decide which truths I was strong enough to hear.
One rainy afternoon, I stood beside Luka in our kitchen while Grace colored at the table.
A delivery arrived.
No return address.
Luka examined it before bringing it inside.
“Probably nothing.”
“With our family?”
“Fair point.”
I opened the package.
Inside was a small metal box.
My heart stopped.
It looked exactly like the box from my father’s cabin.
Luka came closer.
“What is that?”
“I don’t know.”
There was no key.
Only a digital lock.
And a folded note.
I opened it.
Five words were typed across the center.
THOMAS CARTER DIDN’T FIND EVERYTHING.
My hands went cold.
Below the sentence was another code.
Not M-17.
M-18.
Luka took the note.
His expression hardened.
Grace looked up from the table.
“Mommy?”
I forced myself to smile.
“Everything’s okay, sweetheart.”
Luka looked at me.
We both knew that might not be true.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Then an elderly woman whispered.
“Elena Carter?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t know me.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“But I knew Daniel Mercer.”
My eyes moved toward Grace.
The woman continued.
“And if you believe Daniel donated that sample willingly, then Adrian Vale wasn’t the last person who lied to you.”
The call disconnected.
I stared at Luka.
Five years earlier, a tattooed stranger had signed his name on the father line because my husband walked away.
I had believed M-17 was the secret that changed everything.
I was wrong.
Because inside the locked box on my kitchen table was another file.
Another name.
Another piece of Grace’s story.
May you like
And this time, my father looked more frightened than anyone.
