Chapter 15 - THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE ROAD

Michael Carter lived three hours north.

Not under another identity.

Not behind armed guards.

In a small white house beside an abandoned orchard.

My father insisted on going alone.

I refused.

Luka drove.

When Michael opened the door, I understood immediately that he and Thomas were brothers.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same habit of gripping the doorframe when shocked.

“Tommy?”

My father broke.

I had never seen a grown man collapse into another man’s arms before.

They stood on the porch crying.

Thirty years disappeared between them.

Later, Michael told us everything.

He had been twenty-four.

Married.

Poor.

Terrified.

Eleanor Vale had been twenty-six and trapped in a violent marriage.

They had an affair.

When she became pregnant, Victor discovered it.

Instead of divorcing her, Victor created a bargain.

Michael disappeared.

Eleanor stayed.

Adrian would be raised as Victor’s son.

Michael received money and threats.

He believed Thomas knew.

Thomas believed Michael had died in a boating accident.

Victor had built lies around both brothers.

“Why come forward now?”

I asked.

Michael looked at Grace sleeping in my arms.

“Because Adrian found me.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

My stomach tightened.

Adrian had known everything for two years.

Again.

“He wanted my DNA.”

Michael said.

“I refused.”

“So he searched for M-17.”

“Yes.”

“And when I became pregnant, he realized Grace could become replacement genetic evidence.”

Michael’s face filled with shame.

“I didn’t know he had done that.”

I believed him.

He had the same expression my father wore when blaming himself for things Victor had done.

Michael looked at me.

“There’s something you deserve to know.”

I waited.

“Adrian did love you.”

I almost laughed.

Michael continued.

“That doesn’t excuse anything.”

“No.”

“He came to me drunk once.”

I stiffened.

“He said marrying you started as a way to find Thomas.”

My chest hurt despite everything.

“But?”

“He said somewhere along the way, the lie became the only life he wanted.”

I looked away.

That was almost worse.

Because some part of me had wondered whether every smile had been fake.

Apparently not.

Some had been real.

Real love had simply existed beside unforgivable choices.

Michael leaned forward.

“He became like Victor because he believed losing power was worse than losing himself.”

I kissed Grace’s forehead.

May you like

“And now?”

“Now he loses both.”
