Chapter 5 - The Missing Minute

The recording was real.
It came from a night six months earlier.
Sophie had spilled paint across the living-room carpet.
I was grieving my mother, working overtime, and sleeping four hours a night.
I raised my voice.
I immediately apologized.
Mark removed that part.
He removed the moment Sophie climbed into my lap.
He removed me saying that frustration was not her fault.
He released only forty-two seconds.
The full recording lasted seven minutes.
Fortunately, the original remained on the garage hard drive.
Detective Ruiz recovered it before Mark’s attorney could destroy it.
The complete version showed Mark standing behind the camera.
He did not help.
He did not comfort Sophie.
He kept recording while quietly asking questions.
“Is Mommy frightening you?”
“Does Mommy shout every day?”
“Do you want Daddy to take you somewhere safe?”
Sophie kept answering no.
Mark asked until she stopped responding.
He had been collecting material long before the bath sessions began.
His lawyer still filed an emergency custody motion.
The filing claimed the criminal investigation created an unsafe environment for Sophie.
It requested that she be placed with Mark’s brother, Nathan Dalton.
I had met Nathan only four times.
He lived in another state and worked as an administrator for a private youth residence.
Ruiz searched his background.
Nathan’s residence had transferred three children into Brightwell programs.
He was not an alternative to Mark.
He was part of the system.
The family-court judge denied the request.
Then a second order appeared.
This one carried the signature of Judge Leonard Voss.
It authorized Sophie’s removal for an independent psychological evaluation.
Hospital staff prepared to comply until Ruiz noticed the court stamp.
The case number belonged to an unrelated property dispute.
The order was forged.
A man wearing a child-services badge was already inside the hospital.
Security cameras showed him entering the elevator toward Sophie’s floor.
The hospital locked down.
I ran into her room.
She was coloring beside the window.
The false social worker reached the hallway seconds later.
Security officers stopped him.
Inside his bag were restraints, a sedative spray, and travel documents bearing Sophie’s photograph.
The destination was a Brightwell property near the Canadian border.
The man refused to identify who hired him.
Then his phone rang.
May you like
The caller’s name appeared on the screen.
NATHAN DALTON.
