Chapter 10 - Rachel Crane
The search of Nathan’s cabin continued.
Investigators discovered a second chamber behind a false wall.
Rachel Crane was inside.
She was alive.
For three years, Brightwell had kept her drugged and isolated.
Nathan told her that her daughter Olivia hated her.
He showed her edited videos.
He said Olivia had moved overseas and never wanted contact.
Rachel was transported to a hospital under guard.
When she was strong enough to speak, she identified Mark, Nathan, Evelyn, and Judge Voss.
She also identified another person.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
Sophie’s pediatrician.
Reed had treated her since infancy.
He told me her fatigue was normal.
He dismissed the dark circles beneath her eyes.
He renewed prescriptions Mark later altered.
He provided the medical forms Brightwell used to classify Sophie as emotionally disturbed.
Reed had known.
Police searched his clinic.
They found tissue samples from Brightwell children.
He had been monitoring liver function and neurological changes without telling parents.
Jacob Lee’s records showed signs of poisoning months before his death.
Reed hid the results.
He was arrested while attempting to cross the border.
Inside his car was a hard drive labeled PHASE TWO.
Brightwell had planned to expand from custody cases into criminal testimony.
Private clients wanted children conditioned to identify specific adults.
A child could be made to repeat a name after a staged incident.
The method could destroy teachers, relatives, political opponents, or witnesses.
The work was scientifically unreliable.
That did not matter.
It only needed to sound convincing in court.
Mark had selected Sophie because she trusted him completely and had a mother with an old therapy history.
If the method convinced professionals that I had harmed her, Brightwell could sell the system as proven.
Sophie’s fear had been a product.
My life had been the demonstration.
Rachel asked to see Olivia.
Authorities located her at a school in Switzerland.
Her father had abandoned her after Brightwell came under investigation.
Mother and daughter spoke by video.
Olivia cried before Rachel appeared on screen.
“I said things about you.”
Rachel answered.
“You were a child.”
“They made me say them.”
“You were a child.”
The repetition seemed to release something inside both of them.
Then Rachel asked about Sophie.
