Chapter 14 - Evelyn Explains Herself
Evelyn chose to testify.
Her attorneys believed her professional authority might influence the jury.
She wore a dark blue suit.
She spoke as though delivering a university lecture.
She described Brightwell as an experimental family-communication program.
She called the medication a relaxation aid.
She called the cold water an attention reset.
She called repeated phrases memory reinforcement.
She called children subjects because research required organization.
The prosecutor displayed Jacob’s autopsy.
Evelyn blamed Dr. Reed.
The prosecutor displayed Sophie’s dosing chart.
Evelyn blamed Mark.
The prosecutor displayed her own messages.
Increase exposure.
Maternal bond still interfering.
Evelyn said the words were taken out of context.
Then the prosecutor played the hospital recording.
Evelyn stood outside the locked bathroom holding a syringe.
Your mother said the same thing.
The jury heard the threat.
Evelyn heard herself without professional language surrounding it.
For the first time, her confidence wavered.
“Why did you mention Claire’s mother?” the prosecutor asked.
“She harassed my family.”
“She discovered you were drugging Sophie.”
“She misinterpreted a medical test.”
“Did Nathan cut her brake line?”
“I do not know.”
The prosecutor displayed Nathan’s message.
The nurse will not interfere again.
Evelyn claimed it referred to legal action.
Then Nathan changed his plea.
He agreed to testify in exchange for avoiding a murder charge carrying life without parole.
He told the court Evelyn ordered him to damage Diane’s car.
She said a minor accident would frighten her.
Nathan knew cutting the line could kill her.
He did it anyway.
Mark knew afterward.
He helped create the false weather report used in the police file.
My mother’s death had been a family project.
Evelyn looked at Nathan with open hatred.
“You weak little coward.”
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor stepped closer.
“Is that what you called the children who refused the bath games?”
Evelyn did not answer.
Her calm authority disappeared.
