Chapter 15 - Grandma’s Final Move

Grandma had owned part of Whitmore Development.

I thought Dad was lying.

Charles did not.

His face changed the moment I told him.

“My father gave Evelyn shares forty years ago.”

“Why?”

“She helped him keep the company alive during a recession.”

Those shares had vanished from internal records after Grandma’s death.

Maya searched the trust documents.

Hidden behind a sealed amendment was the answer.

Grandma had transferred the shares into my trust.

Eleven percent of Whitmore Development.

Enough to matter in nearly every major shareholder vote.

Caleb had spent four years trying to gain control of those shares without revealing they existed.

My father’s shell company gave him a path.

If I appeared financially compromised, Caleb could challenge the trust.

If I married Daniel, however, independent attorneys would likely audit everything.

That was why our relationship had become a threat.

I stared at the paperwork.

“All of this because Grandma trusted me with eleven percent?”

Charles shook his head.

“Not because of the percentage.”

“Because of what those shares represent.”

Combined with Daniel’s shares, we could block Caleb permanently.

More importantly, Grandma had attached another condition.

The shares carried access rights to historical audit records.

Records Caleb thought had been destroyed.

Maya accessed them that afternoon.

There it was.

The complete foundation trail.

Thirty-two million dollars.

Caleb had moved charitable funds into private developments.

Robert had helped disguise the transactions.

Dennis Cole had discovered it.

Grandma had discovered it.

Both later died.

The evidence was finally enough for prosecutors to seek murder-conspiracy charges related to Grandma’s death and reopen Dennis’s case.

A federal warrant for Caleb was issued.

Daniel looked relieved.

I was not.

“Where is he?”

Nobody knew.

Then the answer came from the person I least expected.

Mom.

She entered the conference room carrying Dad’s old address book.

“There’s a cabin.”

“What cabin?”

“Robert and Caleb used it years ago.”

“Where?”

“Upstate.”

Daniel called federal agents.

Mom stopped him.

“There’s something else.”

Her hands shook.

“Caleb called me this morning.”

The room froze.

“What did he want?”

“He wants Grace.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Absolutely not.”

Mom looked at me.

“He said if Grace doesn’t come to the cabin by midnight, he releases documents proving Robert wasn’t the only person who knew about Evelyn.”

I stared at her.

“Who else knew?”

May you like

Mom began crying.

“I did.”
