Chapter 13 - The Warehouse

The signal led to an abandoned logistics warehouse in Queens.
Federal tactical teams moved in before midnight.
Daniel and I waited at the command center.
Every minute felt like an hour.
Then Maya received confirmation.
Aaron Sloan had been arrested.
Dad had been recovered alive.
Caleb was gone.
Again.
There was a tunnel beneath the warehouse leading to another property.
A vehicle had been waiting.
Daniel slammed his fist into the table.
“He always has another exit.”
Maya shook her head.
“Not this time.”
Agents had found Caleb’s laptop.
Most files were encrypted.
One was not.
A calendar.
Tomorrow’s date carried a single entry.
BOARD - 10:00 A.M.
Charles stared at it.
“He’s going after the company.”
By morning, we understood how.
Caleb still controlled enough proxy votes to challenge Charles for leadership.
If he could force Charles out before formal charges were filed, he could seize company systems and potentially destroy records.
Daniel wanted the meeting canceled.
Charles refused.
“If we cancel, he knows we’re afraid.”
“Dad, he kidnapped someone.”
“And he will answer for that.”
Charles looked toward me.
“But first we finish what Evelyn started.”
At ten, the Whitmore board assembled.
Reporters crowded the street outside.
Federal agents remained hidden throughout the building.
Caleb appeared by secure video.
He looked perfectly composed.
“I move for Charles Whitmore’s immediate removal.”
The room erupted.
Caleb accused Charles of concealing fraud.
He accused Daniel of using his relationship with me to steal control of the Singapore fund.
Then he produced documents supposedly showing that I had willingly participated.
My signature appeared everywhere.
Board members began whispering.
Daniel stood.
“They’re forged.”
Caleb smiled.
“Everything is forged when Daniel dislikes it.”
Then Maya entered.
She carried Grandma’s ledger.
Caleb’s expression finally changed.
Maya addressed the board.
“This meeting is being recorded.”
“Good.”
Caleb leaned toward his camera.
“Then record this.”
He looked directly at me.
“Grace Carter has known about Carter Meridian for years.”
“That’s a lie.”
“Is it?”
Caleb displayed a photograph.
It showed me entering a bank with my father.
The date was three years earlier.
I remembered the day.
Dad said we were opening my college savings account.
Caleb smiled.
“That was the day Grace Carter became an authorized signatory.”
I stared at the photograph.
May you like
Maya went silent.
And for the first time since the investigation began, even Daniel looked at me with confusion.
