Chapter 14 - The Signature I Couldn’t Deny

The photograph was real.
I knew exactly what I had done that day.
Dad had placed forms in front of me.
He told me they were documents required for my college account.
I signed without reading them.
I was eighteen.
He was my father.
I trusted him.
Caleb knew the board would not care about that distinction.
“A legal adult signed the documents.”
Maya responded immediately.
“Consent obtained through fraud is not meaningful authorization for subsequent criminal conduct.”
Caleb smiled.
“Then prove fraud.”
I remembered something.
“The bank had cameras.”
Everyone looked at me.
“Dad explained the papers inside the bank.”
“If there’s audio—”
Maya was already calling.
The bank retained archived security recordings for seven years due to a prior regulatory settlement.
Two hours later, we had the footage.
Dad’s voice was clear.
“These are just college forms, sweetheart.”
Eighteen-year-old me asked.
“Why are there company pages?”
“Tax reasons.”
“Just sign where I marked.”
The board watched in silence.
Caleb’s face tightened.
Maya closed the video.
“That is your proof.”
Charles called the vote.
Caleb lost.
His proxy authority was suspended pending investigation.
Federal agents moved to locate the physical site of his video connection.
But before they could reach him, he disconnected.
Again.
Then another shock arrived.
Dad had been released from the hospital.
He wanted to see me.
I refused at first.
Then Mom asked once.
Not begged.
Not manipulated.
Just asked.
So I went.
Dad sat in a guarded hospital room.
Bruises covered his face.
He looked at Emma in my arms.
“Can I see her?”
“No.”
He nodded as though he expected that.
“I deserve that.”
He handed me an envelope.
Inside was a notarized confession.
Everything.
The identity theft.
The stolen funds.
Grandma’s records.
The lies about Daniel.
“I’m pleading guilty.”
I stared at him.
“Why now?”
“Because Caleb told Aaron to kill me after he got the ledger.”
Dad swallowed.
“I finally understood what I had done.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You finally understood what it felt like when somebody else decided your life was disposable.”
Dad lowered his eyes.
I turned to leave.
“Grace.”
I stopped.
“There is one more thing.”
I looked back.
Dad’s face had gone pale.
“Caleb didn’t choose you because of the trust.”
“He chose you because Evelyn left you something else.”
“What?”
May you like
Dad whispered two words.
“Voting shares.”
