CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET IN THE CONDO

Carmen was arrested before sunset.
So were two of the women who had entered the honeymoon suite.
Javier was taken in for questioning.
By evening, the story had already reached the press.
BRIDE BEATEN ON WEDDING NIGHT OVER LUXURY CONDO.
But the headline was only the surface.
The real secret was hidden inside Sofia’s condo.
Alexander knew it because he had bought the property years earlier for one reason Elena had never known.
He had not simply given Sofia a home.
He had protected evidence.
The next morning, Alexander, Elena, Sofia, two officers, and a court-appointed investigator entered the condo together.
Sofia walked slowly, wrapped in a soft gray coat, her bruises hidden beneath long sleeves.
The place looked untouched.
White walls.
Large windows.
Fresh flowers from before the wedding still sitting on the kitchen counter.
A life waiting for a bride who had never come home.
Sofia stood in the doorway and began to shake.
Elena took her hand.
“You don’t have to do this.”
Sofia looked at her mother.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I do.”
Alexander walked to the hallway closet.
At the back, behind a panel no one would notice unless they knew exactly where to press, was a small steel safe.
Elena stared.
“What is that?”
Alexander entered the code.
The safe opened.
Inside were old files, a flash drive, and a sealed envelope with Sofia’s name written across it.
Sofia looked at her father.
“What is this?”
Alexander’s face softened.
“Your grandfather left records before he died. He believed Carmen’s family had stolen property from several people. I was investigating quietly. Then your mother and I divorced, and I thought keeping the condo in your name would protect the documents until you were old enough.”
Elena’s eyes filled with hurt.
“You never told me?”
“I thought I was protecting both of you.”
“You left us instead.”
Alexander absorbed the words like a punishment he had earned.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “I did.”
Sofia took the envelope with trembling hands.
Inside was a letter from her grandfather.
My dear Sofia,
If you are reading this, it means someone has come for what belongs to you. Do not be afraid of powerful families. Most of them are only powerful because good people stay silent.
Your home is not just property.
It is proof.
Use it wisely.
Sofia covered her mouth.
The flash drive contained recordings, contracts, and names.
Carmen’s late husband.
Corrupt notaries.
Forged transfers.
Women pressured into marriage and stripped of everything.
One video changed the case completely.
It showed Carmen, ten years younger, laughing in a lawyer’s office.
“Love is the easiest contract to exploit,” she said on camera.
Sofia stared at the screen.
“She never wanted Javier to marry me because he loved me.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“She wanted access.”
Elena looked toward the window, her voice bitter.
“And Javier?”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“He chose them.”
That night, Javier called from the police station.
Sofia agreed to speak to him once.
Only once.
His voice cracked through the phone.
“Sofia, please. I was afraid of my mother.”
Sofia sat straight, bruised but no longer broken.
“So was I.”
“I love you.”
“No,” Sofia said. “You loved what I could give your family.”
Javier began to cry.
Sofia did not.
“I am filing for annulment.”
“Sofia—”
“And when they ask me what happened,” she continued, “I’m going to tell the truth.”
May you like
She ended the call.
For the first time since her wedding night, she slept.
