CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO SMILED TOO MUCH

By noon, Carmen Rivera was no longer smiling.
She was standing in the private office of the hotel manager, wearing a cream suit and diamond earrings, pretending not to be afraid.
“This is absurd,” she snapped. “My daughter-in-law had a difficult emotional episode. Brides become dramatic. Everyone knows that.”
Across from her, Alexander sat in silence.
Elena stood behind him.
Sofia was not there.
Alexander had refused to let Carmen see her.
That alone made Carmen furious.
“You have no right to interfere in my son’s marriage,” Carmen said.
Alexander finally looked up.
“My daughter was beaten on her wedding night.”
Carmen laughed once.
A thin, ugly sound.
“Beaten? Please. She was corrected.”
Elena’s hands curled into fists.
Alexander raised one finger slightly, stopping her.
Carmen noticed.
“You see?” she said. “This is exactly the problem. Sofia was raised to believe she answers to no one. In our family, wives understand loyalty.”
Alexander placed a folder on the desk.
Inside were photographs of Sofia’s injuries.
Carmen glanced at them.
For one second, her face changed.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
Then she recovered.
“You cannot prove I did anything.”
Alexander slid a second folder forward.
Hotel security stills.
Carmen entering the suite.
The women behind her.
Javier outside the door.
Carmen’s smile faded.
“You recorded a private family matter?”
“The hotel recorded a crime.”
Carmen leaned forward.
Her voice dropped.
“You think you scare me because you have money?”
Alexander’s expression did not move.
“No.”
He opened a third folder.
Inside were bank transfers, forged contracts, shell companies, and property claims connected to Carmen’s name.
Carmen went still.
Alexander’s voice remained calm.
“You have spent seven years pressuring young women who married into your family to sign over property. Sofia was not your first.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
Carmen’s eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know about Marisol Vega,” Alexander said. “I know about Daniela Ruiz. I know about the cousin who disappeared after refusing to transfer land in Monterrey.”
Carmen’s face drained of color.
Elena whispered, “Alexander…”
He did not stop.
“And I know why you wanted Sofia’s condo.”
Carmen said nothing.
Alexander opened one final document.
“The condo sits on land your late husband illegally sold before his death. If Sofia transferred ownership, you could bury the trail before the civil investigation reopened.”
Carmen’s mouth tightened.
“You are bluffing.”
Alexander stood.
“No. I am giving you one chance to tell the truth before the police arrive.”
Carmen laughed again, but this time the sound shook.
“You won’t destroy Javier. He is Sofia’s husband.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No,” she said.
“He was the man standing outside while your women beat her.”
At that moment, the office door opened.
Javier walked in.
His wedding suit was wrinkled. His hair was messy. His eyes were red from lack of sleep.
“Sofia is my wife,” he said quickly. “I need to see her.”
Alexander turned toward him.
Javier swallowed.
“Sir, please. This got out of control. My mother went too far, but Sofia misunderstood—”
Alexander hit play on the tablet.
Javier’s own voice filled the office.
“Just don’t leave bruises on her face where people will notice.”
The room went silent.
Javier stared at the screen.
Carmen closed her eyes.
Elena covered her mouth.
Alexander stepped closer to his new son-in-law.
“Say another word about misunderstanding.”
Javier’s knees nearly buckled.

Outside the office, police sirens began to rise.
For the first time in her life, Carmen Rivera looked toward the door and realized no one was coming to save her.
