CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN WHO DIDN’T RAISE HIS VOICE

Alexander did not ask the question twice.

He knelt beside Sofia, one hand resting carefully beneath her bruised wrist, as though even the air around her could hurt her if he moved too quickly.

“Who did this?”

Sofia stared at him through swollen eyes.

For years, she had trained herself not to need him.

Not to wait for birthday calls.

Not to look for his car outside graduations.

Not to wonder whether he missed her.

But now, with her wedding dress torn around her knees and blood dried at the corner of her mouth, she looked at him and saw something she had forgotten.

Her father had never stopped being dangerous.

Not loud.

Not reckless.

Dangerous.

“Carmen,” Sofia whispered.

Alexander’s eyes lowered.

Elena watched him from across the coffee table, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. She had known Alexander for twenty-eight years. She had seen him furious. She had seen him betrayed. She had seen him walk out of boardrooms with men ruined behind him.

But this was different.

He was too calm.

“What about Javier?” Alexander asked.

Sofia’s lips trembled.

“He knew.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Alexander slowly stood.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“Where is your phone?”

Sofia shook her head quickly. “They took it.”

“Documents?”

“They tried to make me sign transfer papers. Carmen said the condo should belong to their family now.”

Alexander turned toward Elena.

“Did you see the papers?”

“No,” Elena said. “But Sofia said they brought them to the hotel.”

Alexander nodded once.

Then he pulled out his phone and made a call.

“Elena,” he said without looking away from Sofia, “take pictures of every bruise. Every cut. Do not miss anything.”

Sofia panicked. “No. Please. If Carmen finds out—”

“She will,” Alexander said softly.

Sofia froze.

“She will find out,” he repeated. “But not from fear. From the consequences.”

The call connected.

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“Wake Judge Whitman. Tell him Alexander Valez is requesting an emergency protective order for his daughter.”

Elena stared at him.

“You still know a judge?”

Alexander ended the call and looked at her.

“I know everyone Carmen should have been afraid of.”

For the first time that night, Sofia began to cry without trying to hide it.

Alexander sat beside her again, but he did not hug her until she leaned into him first.

When she finally did, his face cracked for half a second.

Only half a second.

Then it was gone.

At 4:12 a.m., while the city still slept, Alexander’s lawyers, private security team, and a female doctor arrived at Elena’s apartment.

By sunrise, Sofia had medical records.

Photographs.

A statement.

And protection.

By seven o’clock, Carmen was having breakfast at the hotel restaurant, smiling as though she had just won.

She had no idea that Alexander had already watched the security footage.

The hallway outside the honeymoon suite.

Javier standing guard.

Carmen entering with three women.

Sofia stumbling out forty-six minutes later.

And Javier doing nothing.

Alexander watched the video once.

Then he turned to his lawyer.

“Freeze every account connected to Carmen’s companies.”

The lawyer blinked.

“Alexander, that will start a war.”

Alexander looked at the screen, where his daughter appeared again, barefoot and bleeding.

May you like

“No,” he said.

“She started one.”
