Chapter 4: What Carmen Lost

By evening, the police had Carmen in custody.
Not just for assault.
For extortion.
For conspiracy.
For threats.
And once Alexander’s lawyers started digging, they found more.
Other women.
Other marriages.
Other properties “transferred” into Carmen’s family name.
Sofia had not been the first.
But she became the last.
Javier tried to save himself. He blamed his mother. He cried. He begged. He said he loved Sofia.
She listened once.
Only once.
Then she said, “Love doesn’t stand outside a locked door.”
The divorce was filed before the week ended.
The condo stayed in Sofia’s name.
Carmen’s business collapsed within a month. Her wealthy friends disappeared first. Then her partners. Then the people who used to laugh at her cruel jokes.
In court, Carmen finally looked small.
Not sorry.
Just defeated.
When the judge sentenced her, Sofia did not smile. She did not celebrate.
She simply held my hand.
Alexander stood beside us.
For years, our family had been broken.
But that nightmare brought us back into the same room.
After the trial, Sofia walked out of the courthouse into the sunlight.
No veil.
No ring.
No fear.
Alexander opened the car door for her.
I asked softly, “Are you okay?”
Sofia looked at both of us.
Her bruises had faded.
But her eyes were different now.
Stronger.
Clearer.
“I will be,” she said.
Then she looked back at the courthouse one last time.
“She wanted my home.”
Sofia took a slow breath.
“But she forgot something.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
Sofia smiled faintly.
“I was raised by people who know how to survive.”
And for the first time since that terrible night, my daughter laughed.
Not loudly.
Not perfectly.
But freely.
The wedding had ended in horror.
May you like
But her life did not end there.
It began again.
