Chapter 3: The Bride Returns

At noon, Sofia returned to the hotel.

Not alone.

Alexander walked on her right.

I walked on her left.

Behind us came two attorneys, a private doctor, and three security guards.

The lobby went silent.

Wedding guests were still there. Family members. Friends. People who had danced, toasted, and smiled only hours earlier.

Carmen saw us first.

Her face hardened.

“You have some nerve coming here dressed like that.”

Sofia stopped.

Her wedding dress was still torn. Her bruises were uncovered now. She wanted everyone to see.

For once, her voice did not shake.

“No. You had nerve touching me.”

Whispers spread through the lobby.

Javier rushed forward.

“Sofia, baby, let’s talk privately.”

Alexander stepped between them.

“You don’t get private anymore.”

Javier’s eyes flickered with fear.

Carmen raised her chin.

“This is a family matter.”

Alexander pulled out his phone.

“No. This is evidence.”

He pressed play.

Carmen’s voice filled the lobby.

“Sign the condo over, or you’ll learn what happens to disobedient wives.”

Then came the slap.

Then Sofia crying.

Then Javier’s voice from outside the door.

“Just don’t leave bruises on her face where people will notice.”

The entire lobby froze.

Javier looked like he might collapse.

Carmen lunged for the phone, but security caught her before she reached Alexander.

Sofia stared at her husband.

“You heard me scream.”

Javier opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Sofia removed her wedding ring and dropped it onto the marble floor.

The sound was small.

But it ended everything.
