Chapter 1: The Man Who Came Back

Alexander did not raise his voice.
That was what frightened me most.
He sat beside Sofia on the couch, holding her bruised hand like it was made of glass. His jaw was tight. His eyes were empty in a way I had only seen once before—on the day his father died.
“Elena,” he said quietly, “take pictures of everything.”
Sofia panicked.
“No. Please. If Carmen finds out—”
Alexander looked at her.
“She already hurt you because she thought no one would answer.”
His voice dropped.
“She was wrong.”
I took the photos with shaking hands. Her swollen cheek. Her bleeding lip. The fingerprints on her arms. The torn wedding dress.
Every picture felt like a knife.
Then Alexander made one call.
“Dr. Whitman. Private visit. Now.”
Twenty minutes later, a doctor arrived with a black medical bag and two nurses. They treated Sofia in silence. They documented every injury. Every bruise. Every cut.
When the doctor finished, he handed Alexander a sealed envelope.
“This is enough for court.”
Alexander nodded once.
Then Sofia whispered something that made all of us stop breathing.
“There’s more.”
She reached into the torn lining of her wedding dress and pulled out a tiny silver recording device.
“I turned it on when Carmen walked into the room.”
Alexander stared at it.
For the first time that night, his mask cracked.

Sofia’s voice trembled.
“I recorded everything.”
