CHAPTER 3 — THE HOUSE THAT STARTED LYING

I didn’t confront anyone that day.

Not yet.

That would have been emotional.

And emotion was exactly what someone like that would expect.

Instead, I smiled.

I told Chloe to get ready for the recital.

I helped her fix her dress.

I tied her shoes.

And I acted like the world was still normal.

But I was watching everything.

Every reaction.

Every pause.

Every silence.

At the recital hall, Meredith sat beside me, perfectly composed.

“Chloe seems a little quiet today,” she said.

“She’s fine,” I replied.

But I wasn’t looking at Chloe.

I was watching Richard.

My father-in-law.

He sat two rows ahead, calm, hands folded, posture relaxed.

Too relaxed.

Like nothing in the world could touch him.

But when Chloe stepped on stage—

I saw it.

A shift.

Not obvious.

Not dramatic.

Just a slight lean forward.

A focus that didn’t belong to a grandfather watching his granddaughter play piano.

It belonged to someone measuring something.

Assessing control.

My jaw tightened.

And then Chloe played.

Her hands shook slightly over the keys.

Just a fraction.

But I noticed.

Only I noticed.

Because I was no longer listening to the music.

I was watching him.

And I made a decision right there.

This would not end quietly.

Not at home.

May you like

Not in private.

Not the way he expected.
