CHAPTER 2 — THE NAME NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO HEAR

The silence after she said it didn’t feel empty.

It felt dangerous.

“Grandpa Richard.”

I repeated it in my mind, like if I questioned it enough, it would break apart into something harmless.

But Chloe’s eyes didn’t move.

She was waiting for me to believe her.

Not doubt her.

Not analyze.

Just… believe.

I gently pulled her shirt back down without saying a word and sat beside her on the edge of the bed.

“Look at me,” I said softly.

She did.

But only for a second before her gaze dropped again.

That was new.

Chloe always looked at me when she was scared.

Not this time.

“Has this been happening only when I’m not home?” I asked.

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

A small nod.

My chest tightened.

Behind us, footsteps moved downstairs—light, controlled.

Meredith.

Still unaware.

Still normal.

Still living in a version of the world that was about to collapse.

“Did you tell your mom?” I asked.

Chloe shook her head quickly.

“No.”

“Why not?”

Her fingers tightened around the hem of her dress.

“Because he said… no one would believe me.”

The words didn’t sound like a child’s fear.

They sounded taught.

Conditioned.

I stood up slowly.

My hands were steady now.

Too steady.

Because something inside me had already shifted.

This wasn’t confusion.

This wasn’t misunderstanding.

This was control.

May you like

And someone had been controlling my daughter.

For a long time.
