CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Behind The Empire

The next morning, I walked through the doors of Beckett Technologies for the first time as something other than Adrian Beckett’s wife.

I walked in as an owner.

The difference was invisible.

No new clothes.

No dramatic entrance.

No announcement.

Just me.

The same woman who had spent fifteen years quietly standing behind the man everyone admired.

But this time, I wasn’t standing behind anyone.

The lobby became silent when I entered.

Some employees recognized me immediately.

Others whispered.

I heard pieces of conversations as I passed.

“Isn’t that Mrs. Beckett?”

“I thought they were separating.”

“Did something happen?”

I kept walking.

For years, I had worried about what people thought of me.

Today, I realized something important.

People’s opinions changed every day.

The truth did not.

The elevator doors opened.

And standing inside was Marcus Vale.

The man who had shared holiday dinners with us.

The man who had called me “family.”

The man who had smiled at me while secretly trying to destroy everything I helped create.

He looked surprised.

Only for a second.

Then his usual confidence returned.

“Emma.”

His voice was warm.

Too warm.

I smiled politely.

“Marcus.”

He stepped out of the elevator.

“I heard things got complicated.”

“Did you?”

His smile tightened.

“I’m sorry about Adrian and Tessa.”

Interesting.

He already knew.

Too quickly.

“I imagine it must be difficult.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Some things are difficult.”

I paused.

“Especially when people pretend to be your friend.”

For a brief moment, his expression changed.

A tiny crack in the mask.

Then it disappeared.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“I’m sure you don’t.”

I walked past him.

But before I reached the conference room, he called my name.

“Emma.”

I stopped.

“Whatever happened between you and Adrian, don’t let emotions affect business decisions.”

I turned around.

That sentence confirmed everything.

He wasn’t worried about my marriage.

He was worried about control.

“Thank you for the advice.”

Then I smiled.

“But I think I’ll handle my own company.”

The color drained slightly from his face.

“My company?”

“Yes.”

I watched him carefully.

Because for the first time, Marcus realized something.

I knew.

The conference room was already prepared for the shareholder meeting.

A large screen displayed the company logo.

Executives sat around the table.

Adrian entered a few minutes later.

Everyone looked surprised to see us together.

Especially after yesterday.

He sat beside me.

Not in front.

Not as the leader.

Beside me.

A small gesture.

But one that mattered.

Marcus entered last.

He looked confident.

Almost relaxed.

“Good morning, everyone.”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Today is an important day for Beckett Technologies.”

He looked around.

“After careful consideration, I believe the company requires new leadership.”

Nobody spoke.

Marcus continued.

“Adrian has made several questionable decisions recently.”

I glanced at my husband.

His jaw tightened.

Marcus opened the folder.

“And for the stability of this company, I am prepared to take over as CEO.”

A few executives exchanged nervous looks.

Then Marcus smiled.

“I have the documents proving my legal authority.”

He placed the papers on the table.

Everyone looked at them.

Including me.

Then I slowly reached into my bag.

And placed a different folder beside his.

Marcus looked at it.

“What is that?”

I opened it calmly.

“The original ownership agreement.”

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What?”

I looked around the table.

“My name appears on the original incorporation documents.”

Silence.

I continued.

“Not as Adrian Beckett’s wife.”

I looked at Marcus.

“But as co-founder and majority owner.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stared at the papers.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“What’s impossible is believing you could steal a company from the person who built it.”

Adrian looked at me.

And for the first time in years…

I saw pride in his eyes.

Not because I was saving him.

Because I was finally choosing myself.

Marcus suddenly laughed.

A cold, nervous laugh.

“You think a piece of paper changes everything?”

I closed the folder.

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Evidence changes everything.”

His smile faded.

“What evidence?”

I looked toward the door.

It opened.

And Daniel Harper walked in.

Carrying a second folder.

“Financial records,” Daniel said.

Marcus stood still.

“What are you doing here?”

Daniel smiled.

“Making sure the truth arrives on time.”

I watched Marcus carefully.

Because his confidence was disappearing.

And then I noticed something.

He wasn’t afraid of losing the company.

He was afraid of what was inside that folder.

I turned to Daniel.

“What did you find?”

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

Then he said:

“Proof that Marcus Vale didn’t just steal money from Beckett Technologies.”

May you like

He looked at Adrian.

“He planned to destroy the company completely.”
