CHAPTER 2 — The Man I Thought I Knew

The lobby suddenly felt smaller.

The people around us disappeared.

The sounds of phones ringing, footsteps on marble floors, and quiet conversations became distant echoes.

All I could see was Adrian.

My husband.

The man whose signature was sitting on a document that could change my entire life.

“What is this?” I asked.

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

Adrian looked at Tessa with anger burning in his eyes.

“You had no right.”

Tessa flinched.

But she didn’t step back.

“I had every right.”

That answer shocked me.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was protecting me.

I looked down at the papers again.

The first page was a transfer agreement.

The second was a list of company assets.

The third…

was a divorce settlement proposal.

But it wasn’t a normal divorce agreement.

My name appeared everywhere.

Not as a wife.

As a liability.

I read the sentence again and again.

“Upon separation, Emma Beckett will receive no claim to company ownership, personal assets, or future profits generated by Beckett Technologies.”

My hands went cold.

I looked at Adrian.

“You were going to make me leave with nothing?”

His expression hardened.

“Emma, you don’t understand.”

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

“I don’t understand?”

The employees around us became completely still.

“You spent fifteen years telling everyone that we built this together.”

I pointed at the document.

“But secretly, you were preparing to erase me?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Lower your voice.”

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Not because he said it.

Because it reminded me of every time I had protected him.

Every time I swallowed my pain because I didn’t want to embarrass him.

Every time I chose peace over truth.

I looked at him and realized something terrifying.

I wasn’t standing in front of a man who betrayed me yesterday.

I was standing in front of a man who had been betraying me for months.

“Why?” I whispered.

For a moment, something changed in his eyes.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

Those words cut deeper than any confession.

Tessa closed her eyes.

“I found the documents three weeks ago.”

I turned toward her.

“Why were you looking at his files?”

She hesitated.

Then she answered honestly.

“Because I realized Adrian wasn’t treating me like someone he loved.”

The lobby became silent again.

“He wasn’t making plans with me,” she continued. “He was using me.”

I stared at her.

The woman I had imagined as my enemy was standing there telling me the truth.

“He told me he was leaving you because you were holding him back,” Tessa said quietly.

My chest tightened.

“He said you weren’t ambitious enough. That you didn’t understand his world anymore.”

I felt something break inside me.

Not because I believed those words.

But because I remembered all the sacrifices I had made.

When Adrian started his company, I worked two jobs so he could invest every dollar into his dream.

When he traveled for meetings, I stayed home and managed everything.

When his father became sick, I was the one who sat in the hospital every night.

I had spent years helping him become the man everyone admired.

And now he wanted to rewrite history.

“I never held you back,” I said.

Adrian looked away.

That was his answer.

Tessa handed me another envelope.

“There’s more.”

I opened it slowly.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Emails.

My heart began racing.

Because the dates matched.

The hidden accounts.

The secret transfers.

The money moving out of our shared investments.

Millions of dollars.

And every transaction had one destination.

A private account under a company name I had never heard before.

I looked at Adrian.

“Where did the money go?”

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

The fear on his face told me everything.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

The caller ID made my entire body freeze.

It was my attorney.

The one Adrian had never met.

The one I hired two days ago after discovering the messages.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A serious voice spoke on the other end.

“Mrs. Beckett, we found something you need to know.”

I stepped away from Adrian.

“What is it?”

A pause.

Then the attorney said:

“Your husband has been preparing this divorce for months.”

I closed my eyes.

I already knew.

But the next sentence changed everything.

“He wasn’t planning to leave you.”

My breath stopped.

“He was planning to make sure you couldn’t fight back.”

I looked through the glass doors of Beckett Technologies.

The company Adrian loved more than anything.

The company I helped build.

And for the first time in fifteen years…

I realized something.

May you like

I wasn’t the woman being abandoned.

I was the woman being targeted.
