CHAPTER 1 — The Envelope She Handed Me

The elevator doors opened.

And there he was.

Adrian Beckett.

My husband of fifteen years.

The man who had promised me forever beneath the lights of a small church in Arizona. The man who once held my hands and told me I was the only person in the world who truly understood him.

But that morning, standing in the middle of his company’s marble lobby, surrounded by employees and strangers, he looked at me like I was someone he no longer recognized.

His eyes moved from me to the two suitcases beside my feet.

Then they landed on Tessa.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The silence was so heavy I could hear the faint hum of the building’s air conditioning.

“Emma…” Adrian finally whispered.

I smiled.

Not because I was happy.

Because after fifteen years, I had finally stopped begging someone to choose me.

“Good morning, Adrian.”

His jaw tightened.

“What are you doing?”

I glanced at the suitcases.

“I believe the answer is obvious.”

A few employees nearby pretended not to stare. They looked away quickly, but everyone was listening.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Can we talk privately?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The word surprised even me.

For years, I had been the wife who protected his reputation. The woman who smiled through business dinners, who remembered birthdays, who stood beside him when he built Beckett Technologies from a small startup into a company everyone in Phoenix knew.

I had spent half my life making sure nobody saw his weaknesses.

Today, I wanted everyone to see mine had disappeared.

Tessa stepped forward slowly.

“Mrs. Beckett…”

Her voice was softer than I expected.

I looked at her.

The woman who had appeared in my husband’s messages.

The woman who had received the words that used to belong only to me.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

That surprised me.

I expected arrogance.

I expected a smug smile.

I expected someone who believed she had won.

Instead, she looked nervous.

Almost afraid.

“I think there’s something you need to know.”

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small white envelope.

My heartbeat slowed.

“What is that?”

Tessa looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

“Something Adrian never wanted you to see.”

The expression on my husband’s face changed instantly.

For the first time that morning…

he looked scared.

“Don’t,” Adrian said sharply.

Tessa ignored him.

She placed the envelope in my hands.

“Please read it before you decide what really happened.”

I looked down.

My name was written across the front.

Emma Beckett.

My fingers trembled slightly as I opened it.

Inside was a stack of documents.

The first page made my breath stop.

Because it wasn’t a love letter.

It wasn’t a confession.

It was a legal document.

And at the bottom of the page was Adrian’s signature.

A signature dated six months earlier.

Six months before I ever smelled another woman’s perfume on his shirt.

Six months before I found those messages.

Six months before I believed my marriage was falling apart.

I slowly looked up.

“Adrian…”

His face had gone pale.

“What did you do?”

Nobody answered.

Then Tessa whispered the words that changed everything.

“He wasn’t leaving you for me.”

May you like

She swallowed hard.

“He was planning to destroy you.”
