Chapter 6 - THE CHILD VANESSA NEVER MENTIONED

The fertility clinic refused to release medical information without a warrant.

Detective Kim obtained one after the financial unit linked stolen corporate funds to the payments.

The records contained a surprise no one expected.

Vanessa had given birth to a son three years earlier.

The pregnancy had been hidden in Europe.

The child’s name was Oliver Sloan.

Father listed as Eric Sloan.

Vanessa had told Patricia she was attending a yearlong business program in Switzerland.

In reality, she lived in a private medical residence until Oliver was born.

The boy now lived with Eric’s mother outside Boston.

Vanessa visited him twice a year.

Corporate funds paid every expense.

Daniel stared at the birth certificate.

“I have a nephew.”

Patricia had known.

She sent monthly payments through Mercer International Holdings.

Vanessa’s desperation was not only about luxury purchases and investment losses.

Eric had threatened to seek full custody of Oliver unless she gave him three million dollars.

He claimed the money was his share of the secret company.

Vanessa believed the twins’ trust would cover the immediate payment and buy time.

That still did not explain the missing eight million.

The forensic audit traced it to four properties purchased under shell companies.

One belonged to Eric.

Two belonged to Patricia.

The fourth was a private rehabilitation center that did not exist.

Invoices showed Daniel had supposedly authorized treatment for substance dependence.

I stared at the document.

“Whose treatment?”

“Mine,” Daniel said.

The false medical file described him as addicted to prescription stimulants.

It claimed he experienced paranoia and memory loss.

A doctor named Matthew Grey had signed the report.

Daniel had never met him.

The report was dated six months before his overseas assignment.

Patricia planned to use it if the fraudulent company failed.

She would claim Daniel created Mercer International Holdings while impaired.

Then she would take temporary control of Mercer Global Engineering.

Vanessa’s theft would become Daniel’s collapse.

The family company would survive.

Daniel would not.

Detective Kim looked at him.

“Did your mother encourage you to take the overseas assignment?”

“Yes.”

“She said the project needed a Mercer.”

“She also urged the board to give me sole signing authority while abroad.”

The arrangement made forged remote signatures appear believable.

Patricia had not merely covered Vanessa’s theft after discovering it.

She had prepared Daniel as the fall guy.

He sat beside James’s incubator while reading the report.

His son’s tiny hand rested against the glass.

“I spent my entire life thinking she protected Vanessa because Vanessa was weaker.”

I touched his shoulder.

“She protected Vanessa because you always carried the cost.”

He looked toward me.

“I let her.”

“You trusted your mother.”

“I ignored what it did to you.”

The truth hurt him.

But he did not run from it.

“When the card appeared in your name, I asked you not to report it.”

“Yes.”

“I said Vanessa would repay it.”

“Yes.”

“I made you responsible for keeping peace.”

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I am sorry.”

It was the first apology anyone in his family had given without adding a reason.

I leaned toward him.

“Then do not ask me to forgive quickly.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not ask me to visit Vanessa.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not let Patricia near the twins.”

“I won’t.”

He opened his eyes.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“All of it.”

“And a life where our children never learn that love means paying for someone else’s crimes.”

Daniel nodded.

“We will build that.”

Before he could say more, Detective Kim received a call.

Vanessa had asked to speak.

She would explain the company, the missing money, and Patricia’s plan.

Her condition was simple.

She wanted immunity for the assault.

Detective Kim looked toward the NICU.

“That is not going to happen.”

Vanessa’s attorney changed the request.

Reduced charges.

Protective custody.

And permission to see Oliver before trial.

Then Vanessa added one final claim.

“Patricia did not prepare Daniel only for financial blame.”

“She prepared for his death.”
