Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO CALLED IT FAMILY BUSINESS

Daniel met Patricia in a private consultation room.

Detective Kim recorded the conversation with his permission.

Patricia entered wearing a cream wool coat and pearl earrings.

She looked as composed as she did at board meetings.

“Where are the babies?” she asked.

“In intensive care.”

“And Rachel?”

“She survived.”

Patricia closed her eyes briefly.

“Thank God.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Did you give Vanessa the key?”

Patricia removed her gloves slowly.

“I allowed her to enter the house.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She needed Rachel to sign documents.”

“Documents stealing our children’s trust?”

“Recovering family money.”

Daniel’s chair scraped against the floor.

“That trust belongs to my children.”

“The account was created with money that should have remained available to the company.”

“Rachel’s inheritance funded most of it.”

“She married into our family.”

“That does not transfer ownership of everything she has.”

Patricia’s face hardened.

“She has always encouraged division.”

“Separate accounts.”

“Private property.”

“Restrictions on family access.”

“She protected herself.”

“From what?”

Daniel looked at her.

“From this.”

Patricia leaned forward.

“Vanessa did not intend to injure her.”

“She punched an eight-month-pregnant woman.”

“She panicked.”

“She dragged Rachel across the floor.”

“Because Rachel threatened her.”

“The camera recorded everything.”

Patricia became silent.

For the first time, fear appeared behind her control.

“What camera?”

“The one Vanessa destroyed after the footage had already uploaded.”

Patricia looked toward the door.

Detective Kim entered.

“You are not free to leave yet.”

Patricia stood.

“I need an attorney.”

“You may call one.”

Before she did, Daniel asked the question that had been waiting since the financial records appeared.

“What is Mercer International Holdings?”

Patricia sat again.

Her expression changed from concern to calculation.

“A temporary company.”

“Created under my name.”

“To protect the family’s reputation.”

“By putting the debt on me?”

“We expected to close it before you returned.”

“What happened to the eleven million dollars?”

“Investments.”

“What investments?”

“Properties.”

“Private ventures.”

“Vanessa’s partners.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You gave Vanessa eleven million dollars?”

“She promised a rapid return.”

“Using my identity?”

“You were unavailable.”

“I was working overseas for the real company.”

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Your project was already profitable.”

“Vanessa needed one opportunity to prove herself.”

The pattern became clear.

Daniel had spent his life carrying the family business.

Vanessa had spent hers demanding the rewards.

Whenever she failed, Patricia moved the cost onto Daniel.

A lost investment became his company debt.

A forged loan became his signature.

An assault became a misunderstanding.

“What went wrong?” Detective Kim asked.

Patricia looked toward her attorney’s number on her phone.

She did not answer.

Daniel did.

“The investment never existed.”

Patricia’s silence confirmed it.

Vanessa had moved money into a network of personal accounts.

Designer purchases.

Private travel.

A luxury condo.

Payments to a man named Eric Sloan.

Eric described himself online as an investment strategist.

He had no registered firm.

He did have three previous fraud complaints.

Patricia had discovered the missing money two months earlier.

Instead of reporting Vanessa, she created a plan.

Use the twins’ trust to make the next loan payment.

Obtain additional funds from Daniel’s corporate account.

Then sell a company property before the annual audit.

They believed the gap could be hidden.

They did not believe I would refuse.

Detective Kim placed another document on the table.

It was a draft accident report.

The report claimed I fell down the stairs during a pregnancy-related dizzy spell.

My signature appeared beneath a statement accepting responsibility for my injuries.

Daniel read it slowly.

“This was created yesterday.”

Patricia looked away.

His voice became quieter.

“Did you know Vanessa planned to hurt Rachel?”

“No.”

“But you prepared an explanation before she went to the house.”

May you like

Patricia said nothing.

That silence ended whatever remained between them.
