Chapter 2 - THE SERVER SHE COULD NOT BREAK

The emergency team rushed me into surgery within twenty minutes.
Baby A’s heart rate had dropped dangerously low.
Baby B was in distress.
Daniel signed forms with a hand that could barely hold the pen.
Then the operating-room doors closed between us.
He later told me he stood in the hallway staring at the red light above those doors.
He had spent six months overseas managing a construction project in Singapore.
He had negotiated contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
He had remained calm during site accidents, lawsuits, and a typhoon evacuation.
But while his wife and unborn children were behind one locked door, he could not form a complete thought.
Detective Laura Kim found him in the waiting room.
She was the officer assigned after police viewed the scene at our house.
“Mr. Mercer?”
Daniel stood.
“How is my wife?”
“I was going to ask you.”
“She is in surgery.”
Detective Kim nodded.
“Your sister is in custody.”
“She says Rachel attacked her first.”
Daniel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Rachel is eight months pregnant.”
“People can still become violent while pregnant.”
“My wife has difficulty bending to tie her shoes.”
“She did not chase Vanessa through the house.”
Kim placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was the broken hallway camera.
“The memory card was removed.”
Daniel looked at it.
“Vanessa crushed it.”
“She admitted that.”
“She claims Rachel had been recording her illegally.”
“It is our home.”
“She knew the camera was there.”
Detective Kim opened her notebook.
“Do you have any other surveillance system?”
Daniel looked toward the wall.
The answer reached him.
“Yes.”
“Rachel changed it before I left.”
The original camera stored recordings locally.
Two months earlier, after packages disappeared from our porch, I replaced it with a system that uploaded automatically to encrypted cloud storage.
Vanessa had seen the old camera.
She did not know about the upgrade.
Daniel accessed the server from his phone.
The hallway footage appeared.
The recording began eleven minutes before he entered.
Vanessa stood outside our front door.
She used a key.
Daniel’s face changed.
“I never gave her one.”
The footage showed Vanessa entering quietly.
She carried a leather document case.
I appeared from the kitchen.
I looked surprised.
The camera had no audio until Vanessa moved closer.
Then the microphone captured everything.
“Give me the transfer code.”
“No.”
“The money is not yours.”
“It belongs to the twins.”
“It came from Daniel’s family.”
“It came from my inheritance and Daniel’s earnings.”
Vanessa opened the document case.
She removed several forms.
“You already authorized me.”
“I have never signed those.”
“Your signature is there.”
“That is not my signature.”
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“Then sign again.”
I moved toward the phone on the console table.
She struck me in the stomach.
Daniel stopped the video.
His face became gray.
Detective Kim did not speak.
He forced himself to continue.
The footage showed me fold forward.
Vanessa grabbed my hair.
I fell.
My water broke seconds later.
I begged her to call an ambulance.
She refused.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed the investigation.
“If you go to the hospital now, they’ll timestamp everything before the account clears.”
Detective Kim replayed it.
“Before what account clears?” she asked.
Daniel opened the financial application connected to the twins’ trust.
A transfer had been scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
One hundred fifty thousand dollars.
Destination: Mercer International Holdings.
Daniel stared at the company name.
“It looks like mine.”
“Is it?”
“No.”
“My company is Mercer Global Engineering.”
“I have never seen Mercer International Holdings.”
Detective Kim wrote it down.
“Who created the transfer?”
The authorization page carried two digital signatures.
Rachel Mercer.
Daniel Mercer.
Both were false.
A third name appeared beneath them.
Authorized financial representative: Vanessa Mercer.
Daniel’s phone vibrated.
The hospital surgeon’s name appeared on the screen.
He answered immediately.
“Mr. Mercer, your wife is stable.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And the babies?”
There was a pause.
“Your daughter is breathing with assistance.”
“Your son required emergency resuscitation.”
“He has a heartbeat.”
“But both babies are being transferred to neonatal intensive care.”
Daniel sat down slowly.
The surgeon continued.
“Your wife experienced placental abruption consistent with blunt trauma.”
Detective Kim heard every word.
May you like
The assault was no longer only about a trust.
Vanessa’s demand had nearly killed three people.
