Chapter 6 - The Marriage Plan

I did not sleep that night.
Every memory became evidence.
Julian asking about my father's patents on our third date.
Julian encouraging me to keep my maiden-name documents after we married.
Beatrice insisting I join family dinners where business was discussed.
Arthur laughing because I understood balance sheets better than Julian did.
At the time, I thought they underestimated me.
Now I wondered whether they had been watching me.
Agent Reed returned the next morning.
Chloe came with her.
Without designer makeup and Beatrice's borrowed confidence, she looked twenty-two.
Maybe younger.
She stood in the doorway and stared at the floor.
"I'm sorry."
I looked through the NICU window toward Grace.
"Sorry doesn't erase what you did."
"I know."
"Good."
Reed motioned for Chloe to sit.
"Tell Clara what you told us."
Chloe clasped her hands.
"Beatrice hired me at a Vance Foundation fundraiser."
"For what?"
"At first, to get close to Julian."
"Why would his mother pay someone to seduce him?"
"Because he was talking about leaving the company."
That surprised me.
Julian loved money.
He loved being a Vance.
But apparently there were limits I had never seen.
"He wanted to leave?"
"After you became pregnant."
My eyes narrowed.
Chloe nodded.
"He told her he wanted to sell his shares after the baby was born."
"Why?"
"He said the company was becoming dangerous."
Reed watched me carefully.
"That is consistent with messages we recovered."
I almost laughed at the cruelty of it.
Julian knew enough to fear his family's crimes.
He just never bothered to warn his pregnant wife.
Chloe continued.
"Beatrice wanted leverage."
"So you became leverage."
"Yes."
"And the fake pregnancy?"
"That came later."
"Why?"
"Your daughter."
My hand tightened.
"What about her?"
Chloe glanced at Reed.
Then back at me.
"The Vance family trust has an old provision."
I knew about the trust.
I did not know its details.
"First biological grandchild?"
Chloe nodded.
"When the first grandchild is born, twelve percent of the voting shares transfer into a generational trust."
"Controlled by whom?"
"The child's legal guardian."
Everything clicked.
My marriage.
My pregnancy.
The postnuptial agreement.
The guardian waiver.
Beatrice had not simply wanted me humiliated.
She wanted legal control.
"If Julian and I divorced before Grace was born?"
"The shares would still go into trust if paternity was established."
"But if I signed away guardianship?"
Chloe nodded.
"Julian would control them."
"And Beatrice controls Julian."
"That was the plan."
I looked at Chloe.
"What was your part?"
"Convince Julian he had another baby coming."
"Why?"
"Beatrice told him your IVF pregnancy might not be his."
My anger turned almost calm.
"She told my husband that?"
Chloe nodded.
"She said the clinic had made a mistake."
Reed leaned forward.
"Beatrice also paid an administrator at your fertility clinic."
I stared at her.
"To do what?"
"We're still investigating."
I looked back at Chloe.
"What did Julian believe?"
"He believed my baby was his."
"There was no baby."
"He didn't know."
I swallowed the disgust rising in my throat.
Then Chloe said something unexpected.
"He wasn't supposed to hit you."
I looked at her.
"That's your defense?"
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"I'm telling you because Beatrice changed the plan when she learned about the raid."
My pulse quickened.
"When did she learn?"
"At 1:41."
Nine minutes before someone tried to access the evidence portal.
"How?"
Chloe shook her head.
"I don't know."
"What changed?"
"She told Julian you had betrayed him."
"Then?"
"She told him to make you sign before two."
I remembered Julian arriving furious beneath his smile.
The mistress.
The announcement.
The public humiliation.
It had been pressure.
When I refused to break, he used his fist.
"What was I supposed to sign?"
Chloe reached into her purse.
Agent Reed did not stop her.
She removed a folded photocopy.
"I stole this from Beatrice's desk."
I opened it.
At the top were three words.
TEMPORARY MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION.
I kept reading.
My blood ran cold.
The document would have given Julian authority to make medical decisions if I became incapacitated.
Beneath it was another page.
A petition concerning guardianship of an unborn child.
They had not merely expected me to become emotional.
They had prepared for something worse.
I looked at Reed.
"Why prepare medical authority for a healthy pregnant woman?"
Reed's expression told me she had already asked the same question.
Chloe began crying again.
"I think the punch wasn't part of the plan."
May you like
She looked at me.
"But I think the hospital was."
