Chapter 10 - The Price of Silence

The message was designed to frighten me.
Instead, it answered a question.
Beatrice did not have my father's key.
That meant she needed me.
Agent Reed took my phone.
"Do not respond."
"I wasn't planning to."
"Good."
Another message arrived.
You have until midnight.
Reed photographed the screen.
"She's making a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"Threatening a federal witness while we are actively investigating obstruction."
I looked at the photograph.
"Unless Chloe went willingly."
"Possible."
"She lied to me once."
"Many times."
I nodded.
Trust no Vance.
My father should have written trust no one being paid by one.
The hospital room door opened.
Dr. Patel entered with an exhausted smile.
"Grace is doing well."
Everything else disappeared.
"How well?"
"She's still small, and she needs respiratory support, but her numbers are improving."
"Can I hold her?"
"If things stay stable, maybe later today."
Tears filled my eyes.
For the first time since the shower, I felt something that wasn't fear or anger.
Hope.
Then Reed's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression shifted.
"Where?"
Pause.
"Secure it."
She hung up.
"We found the drink."
My stomach dropped.
"The glass?"
"An agent collected the items from the shower as potential evidence after learning about the assault."
"Was there something in it?"
"It will require lab confirmation."
"What do they think?"
"A sedative."
I stared at her.
"Pregnancy-safe?"
"We don't know yet."
I looked away.
The consequences multiplied in my mind.
A fall.
Low blood pressure.
Loss of consciousness.
A car accident if I had left early.
Anything.
Beatrice had prepared medical authority because she expected me to become medically vulnerable.
"This wasn't a scare tactic."
"No."
"She planned to incapacitate me."
"It appears possible."
"And take guardianship."
Reed nodded carefully.
"We still need proof of intent."
"You have the documents."
"We have pieces."
"I want all of them connected."
"We're working on it."
I looked at my father's twelve-word sequence printed beside the bed.
"Maybe the key connects them."
Reed shook her head.
"We are not using the live key until cybersecurity has an isolated environment."
"Fine."
An hour later, federal technicians arrived.
They entered the words into an offline copy of the software recovered from one of Beatrice's hidden servers.
The first attempt failed.
The second failed.
Then I noticed something.
My father had capitalized three letters.
C.
L.
A.
My initials before marriage.
"Try adding my birth date."
The technician did.
Nothing.
"Try his."
Nothing.
Then I remembered what Dad wrote inside my toolbox.
Clara Louise Hayes.
"Use my middle name."
The technician typed it.
The screen changed.
A directory opened.
There were no account numbers.
No balances.
Only names.
Hundreds of them.
Politicians.
Executives.
Attorneys.
Consultants.
Judges.
Reed leaned closer.
"That's the influence network."
The technician opened another folder.
Inside were audio files.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Blackmail material.
Beatrice had not merely paid powerful people.
She had kept proof of what they had done for her.
Then the technician opened the final directory.
One file was titled HAYES.
My hands began shaking.
He clicked it.
A video appeared.
My father sat at his old desk.
He looked thinner than I remembered.
Tired.
Afraid.
He stared directly into the camera.
"If my daughter is watching this, then Beatrice Vance finally found her."
I stopped breathing.
Dad continued.
"Clara, I need you to understand something."
His eyes filled with pain.
May you like
"I did not lose my company."
"I surrendered it to keep them from taking you."
