Chapter 1 - Two O'Clock

The three knocks came again.

Harder this time.

Julian's confident expression disappeared.

Arthur Vance turned toward the front door, his champagne glass frozen halfway to his mouth.

Beatrice stopped clapping.

For the first time that afternoon, nobody was looking at me.

Everyone was looking at the door.

Then a man's voice thundered from the other side.

"Federal agents. Open the door."

The silence that followed was almost beautiful.

Arthur recovered first.

"This is my home."

He marched toward the foyer.

"You don't enter my property without permission."

The door opened before he reached it.

Agents in dark jackets flooded into the mansion.

FBI.

IRS Criminal Investigation.

Two local detectives.

Behind them came paramedics carrying medical bags.

Arthur's face drained of color.

One of the agents raised a document.

"Arthur Vance, we have a federal search warrant covering this residence, Vance Holdings headquarters, Vance Capital Management, and three additional properties."

Julian looked at me.

Not at his father.

Not at the agents.

At me.

He finally understood my smile.

"You."

His voice barely came out.

I was still on the floor with one arm around my belly.

Another wave of pain rolled through me.

I refused to let him see how frightened I was.

Special Agent Naomi Reed stepped into the room.

She was the woman I had met six times in hidden conference rooms, twice in parked cars, and once in the basement of a federal building while Julian believed I was attending a prenatal appointment.

Her eyes found me immediately.

Then they dropped to the blood near my mouth and the overturned gift table.

"What happened?"

Julian moved before I could answer.

"She fell."

Dozens of faces turned toward him.

I almost laughed.

One of my college friends, Melissa, slowly raised her phone.

"No."

Her voice shook.

"He punched her."

Julian stared at her.

Melissa swallowed.

"I recorded the whole thing."

For the second time in one minute, my husband lost control of his face.

A local detective stepped toward him.

"Sir, put your hands where I can see them."

Julian backed away.

"This is a family misunderstanding."

"You punched an eight-month-pregnant woman."

"She's my wife."

The detective's expression hardened.

"That does not make it better."

The paramedics reached me.

One of them pressed careful fingers against my abdomen while another checked my blood pressure.

"Ma'am, we need to get you to a hospital."

My heart started pounding.

"My baby moved."

"That's good."

The paramedic did not smile.

"But your abdomen took significant trauma."

Julian tried to approach.

I raised one hand.

"Do not touch me."

He stopped.

Something about my voice made the room stop with him.

Agent Reed crouched beside me.

"Clara, the warrants were executed simultaneously."

"Did you get the servers?"

"We're getting them now."

Arthur heard her.

He turned slowly.

"Clara?"

I looked at the man who had spent years treating me like decorative furniture.

"Hello, Arthur."

His eyes narrowed.

"What have you done?"

I thought of the spreadsheets.

The shell companies.

The falsified consulting contracts.

The money routed through charities.

The executives who had destroyed documents after receiving subpoenas in unrelated cases.

The payments hidden behind meaningless invoice numbers.

"I listened."

Arthur stared.

"That's all."

Beatrice suddenly crossed the room.

"You ungrateful little bitch."

Agent Reed stood between us.

"Ma'am, step back."

Beatrice's face twisted.

"You think this girl understands what she has started?"

I looked directly at her.

"No."

I pressed my palm against the small movement beneath my ribs.

"I understand what you started."

The paramedics lifted me onto the stretcher.

As they rolled me toward the door, agents spread through the mansion.

One photographed Arthur's study.

Another placed evidence bags on the dining table.

A third took Julian's phone.

Chloe stood beside the ruined cupcakes, completely forgotten.

For the first time since she arrived, she looked terrified.

Then an agent approached her.

"Chloe Bennett?"

She blinked.

"Yes?"

"We need your phone."

Her hand closed around it.

"I don't work for Vance Holdings."

Agent Reed looked over.

"We know."

Chloe's face went white.

I saw it.

So did Julian.

That was when I realized the raid had frightened Chloe for a reason that had nothing to do with sleeping with my husband.

As the stretcher crossed the doorway, she suddenly shouted after me.

"Clara."

I looked back.

Chloe's eyes were filled with panic.

"There's something you don't know."

Julian snapped his head toward her.

"Shut up."

She ignored him.

"Your evidence isn't the worst thing in that house."

Agent Reed turned.

Chloe pointed toward Beatrice.

May you like

"She has another ledger."

And Beatrice Vance stopped breathing.
