Chapter 1: The Golden Cage

The air inside the penthouse carried a suffocating mix of luxury perfume and something colder—something metallic, like iron hidden beneath silk.
Clara stood barefoot on the marble floor, one hand wrapped around her swollen belly. Her silk pajamas clung to her skin, a single dark stain blooming at the fabric—too red, too real, too wrong. She kept her gaze lowered to the Persian rug beneath her, tracing its intricate golden patterns as if they could anchor her to reality.
Above her, Julian stood perfectly composed.
To the world, he was a legend—Philanthropist of the Year, the man who smiled beside presidents and donated millions for cameras that never stopped flashing. In private, he was something else entirely.
His white dress shirt was spotless. Sleeves rolled just enough to look casual, just enough to hide intent. In his hand, a leather belt hung loose at first—then slowly tightened, the sound sharp in the silence.
“You brought this on yourself, Clara,” he said softly.
Not anger. Not shouting. Worse.
Control.
Clara’s lips trembled. “Please…” Her voice cracked under the weight of fear. “Think about the baby…”
For the briefest moment, something flickered in Julian’s eyes.
Then it was gone.
A cold smile returned.
And the belt rose again.
In the corner of the room, Elena—the maid—stood completely still. Burgundy uniform. Pale face. Hands locked around a silver tray like it was the only thing keeping her upright. She didn’t move. She didn’t breathe.

She only watched.
And remembered everything.
