Chapter 4 - THE WEDDING NIGHT PLAN

Daniel read the schedule three times.
Each time, his face became paler.
Vanessa remained silent.
Elliot Crane finally spoke.
“A planning document is not proof of intent.”
Mara looked at him.
“The poison listed beside the champagne is.”
Daniel stepped away from Vanessa.
“What were you going to give me?”
She shook her head.
“This is not what it looks like.”
The file named a drug that could cause temporary paralysis, confusion, and memory loss.
In large doses, it could stop breathing.
Dr. Samuel Voss had already prepared medical certificates declaring Daniel unable to manage financial affairs.
Vanessa would not need to kill him immediately.
She only needed him helpless long enough to transfer the money.
Afterward, a private clinic would keep him under observation.
If he recovered, she would claim he suffered a psychiatric episode.
If he did not recover, she would become the grieving widow controlling the marital trust.
Daniel looked at me.
“You warned me.”
“I did not know this.”
“But you knew she was wrong.”
“I knew the staff were afraid of her.”
“I knew she changed when you left the room.”
“That was enough to investigate.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I called you controlling.”
“You were protecting someone you loved.”
“No.”
He looked toward Vanessa.
“I was protecting what I wanted to believe.”
Vanessa finally moved.
She stepped toward him slowly.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“My father owes dangerous people money.”
“Crane designed the transfer.”
“I only agreed because he threatened my family.”
Mara opened another message.
Vanessa had written:
Daniel will sign anything if I cry first.
Her father answered:
Then cry beautifully.
Daniel read it.
Whatever remained of the engagement ended in his face.
“Do you love me at all?”
Vanessa looked at him.
For one second, I saw something human.
Shame.
Maybe regret.
Then she returned to strategy.
“I could have loved you after we were safe.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You planned to poison me.”
“I planned to make you sleep.”
“For how long?”
She did not answer.
Mara ordered Vanessa, Crane, and Officer Mercer transported for questioning.
Mercer protested.
Then investigators found a payment from Crane’s company inside his personal account.
The local officer who arrived to dismiss the case had been paid in advance.
As Vanessa was led toward the door, she looked at me.
“You think you won because you wore an ugly uniform?”
“No.”
I removed the wet apron.
“I learned what you do when you think someone has no power.”
She smiled bitterly.
“Power is the only reason anyone listens to you.”
Rosa stepped closer.
“I listened before I knew she was testing you.”
Vanessa looked at her.
Rosa continued.
“Luis listened.”
“The cooks listened.”
“The drivers listened.”
“You believed we were silent because we were weak.”
“We were collecting what you said.”
She handed Mara a second tablet.
The staff had documented six months of abuse.
Recordings.
Photographs.
Messages.
One video showed Vanessa ordering Luis to kneel.
Another showed her breaking a vase and deducting its value from a maid’s wages.
A third showed her meeting Dr. Voss in the greenhouse.
She gave him a vial.
Daniel turned away.
Vanessa’s final defense disappeared.
After the vehicles left, the house became quiet.
Dirty water still marked the marble.
Daniel picked up a towel.
He knelt and began wiping it himself.
“Rosa can handle that,” I said.
“No.”
May you like
He looked at the stain.
“She should never have had to.”
