Chapter 10 - THE FATHER BEHIND THE NETWORK

Gregory Cole disappeared the night of the shelter raid.
Investigators searched his offices.
They found photographs of Vanessa and Veronica beginning at age twelve.
The twins were trained to copy posture, handwriting, accents, and emotional reactions.
Gregory called it social mirroring.
He taught them to enter wealthy families by becoming whatever the target lacked.
Comfort.
Admiration.
Protection.
Obedience.
He was not their biological father.
He had taken them from a foster home after their mother died.
The adoption records were forged.
Their birth name was Bell.
Their mother, Julia Bell, had worked for Elliot Crane.
She discovered he was laundering charity donations through medical clinics.
Crane arranged her death.
Gregory took the girls afterward.
Not to save them.
To train them.
Vanessa had spent most of her life inside the same exploitation she later used against others.
That truth complicated her.
It did not excuse her.
Daniel read the files in silence.
“Did she ever have a chance?”
“Many,” Mara said.
“She chose to drug Michael.”
“She chose to participate in Andrew’s confinement.”
“She chose you.”
“People can be victims and offenders.”
The sentence stayed with him.
Veronica agreed to cooperate.
She described Gregory’s final plan.
If the Whitmore operation failed, he would take the foundation’s confidential donor database.
Some donors were politicians.
Others were judges.
Several had received medical care through our programs.
Their privacy could be sold.
Gregory planned to escape through the old Whitmore airfield.
My husband had built it for emergency medical flights.
Daniel and I went with Mara.
The hangar doors stood open.
A small jet waited on the runway.
Gregory held Vanessa beside the stairs.
She wore handcuffs attached to his wrist.
He had broken her out during transport.
Not because he loved her.
Because she knew the encryption phrase for the donor archive.
Vanessa saw Daniel.
Her face changed.
“Do not come closer.”
Gregory pressed a gun against her ribs.
“She always did have poor taste in timing.”
Daniel stopped.
“Let her go.”
“You still care?”
“I care whether she dies.”
Vanessa stared at him.
The distinction hurt.
Gregory smiled.
“Then provide the crest ring.”
I held it up.
“First release her.”
“No.”
“You taught her never to trust anyone.”
“Now you ask her to trust you.”
Gregory looked toward Vanessa.
“She belongs to me.”
She closed her eyes.
For years, he had called training love.
Ownership family.
Obedience survival.
Vanessa whispered something.
Gregory leaned closer.
She drove her heel into his foot and twisted the handcuff chain around his wrist.
The gun fired into the hangar roof.
Daniel tackled him.
Mara’s agents rushed forward.
Gregory struck Vanessa across the face.
She fell beside the plane.
I caught the gun before he reached it.
He looked at me.
The old housekeeper uniform was folded inside the evidence bag near Mara’s vehicle.
I thought about Vanessa laughing beneath the chandelier.
“You corrupted my daughters,” Gregory said.
“No.”
I aimed steadily.
“You trained them to believe cruelty was the only way not to be powerless.”
Agents handcuffed him.
Vanessa remained on the floor.
Daniel offered his hand.
She looked at it.
May you like
Then she stood without taking it.
That was the first honest choice I had ever seen her make.
