Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL OF TWO BRIDES
Vanessa and Veronica were tried separately.
Veronica accepted a plea agreement.
She testified against Crane, Voss, Gregory, and her sister.
The decision ended their relationship.
Vanessa called her a traitor.
Veronica answered quietly.
“We were raised to become each other’s alibi.”
“I want to become one person.”
Vanessa’s trial lasted seven weeks.
The prosecution presented Michael Sutton’s poisoning.
Andrew Hale’s confinement.
The forged foundation documents.
The fingerprint mold.
The wedding-night schedule.
The dirty-water recording appeared last.
Her attorney objected.
He argued that humiliating a disguised mother had nothing to do with attempted murder.
The judge allowed it as evidence of motive and character surrounding the fraud.
The jury heard Vanessa say:
“People like you should be grateful people like me let you indoors.”
Then they watched her prepare to seize shelters, hospitals, and charitable land from the same people she despised.
I testified for two days.
Vanessa’s attorney began with the disguise.
“You lied about your identity.”
“Yes.”
“You altered your appearance.”
“Yes.”
“You entered a private interaction under false pretenses.”
“I entered my own home.”
“You intended to provoke my client.”
“I intended to observe her.”
“You had already decided she was unworthy of your son.”
“No.”
“I had already decided staff allegations deserved investigation.”
He displayed the video showing me reaching toward Vanessa.
“You touched her.”
“I reached for the bracelet she claimed I stole.”
“Your behavior appeared aggressive.”
“The complete recording shows otherwise.”
The full angle played.
Vanessa hid the bracelet.
Accused me.
Threw water.
Then positioned herself near the camera and pretended I had pushed her.
The attorney changed direction.
“You control enormous wealth.”
“I chair a charitable foundation.”
“You threatened to prevent the marriage.”
“I never threatened Daniel.”
“You conducted a loyalty test.”
“No.”
“I conducted a character test.”
The attorney smiled.
“Who appointed you judge of another woman’s character?”
“The people she harmed told me who she was.”
Vanessa watched from the defense table.
For a moment, our eyes met.
I did not see only a monster.
I saw the girl Gregory trained.
The woman who learned that a uniform made someone safe to abuse.
The bride who believed affection was a transaction.
Understanding did not require acquittal.
The jury convicted her of attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, and financial exploitation.
At sentencing, Vanessa asked to speak.
She looked at Daniel first.
“I did love you.”
He remained silent.
She looked at me.
“You never gave me a chance.”
I answered only when the judge permitted it.
“I gave you an afternoon with someone you believed had no influence.”
“You showed me exactly what you did with it.”
Vanessa received thirty-one years.
Gregory received life.
Crane received forty-eight years.
Dr. Voss received thirty-five.
Officer Mercer received twelve.
The network’s assets were seized.
